vBookie Rules (READ THIS)

Basketballforums vBookie is a betting game that is provided purely for entertainment. You can bet your credits on a variety of bets we post here.

Game bets are bets on the results of individual games. The results are determined by the outcome of actual contests.

1) Betting on the game is allowed up until the start of the game. If the game starts at 7:10 PM EST, then the betting closes at 7:00 PM EST.
2) NBA Game bets are made against the point spread. The point spreads are actual Las Vegas casino sportsbook odds.
3) We reserve the right to cancel all bets for a game and repost the bet (or not) at our disgretion, usually to alleviate an error on our part.
4) All bets are in units of credits. There NEVER will be real money involved; this is just for fun, and a way to earn some extra credits for other uses on the site.

HOW THE POINT SPREADS WORK

In any game, one team is the "favorite" to win, and the team expected to lose is the "underdog." But if just picking winners was all you had to do, it'd be real easy to pick the Spurs (favorite), for example, to win over the Hawks (underdog). To make it challenging, a handicap is placed on the favorite; the underdog is spotted points. So, using this example once more, to make it tougher to choose the winner between the Spurs and Hawks, the Hawks might be spotted 12 points. This means that if the Spurs win, but win by less than 12 points, the Hawks win the game for betting purposes. So the proposition becomes, "will the Spurs win by at least 12 points?" which is a much tougher call.

In the bets we post, the favorite is shown with some negative amount of points. This is the number of points spotted the underdog. The underdog is shown with a positive amount of points.

You can look at it either of two ways: Subtract the points from the favorite's score, or add the points to the underdog's score. Then you can determine the winner of the bet.

Game bets pay 1 point for each point bet, or 1:1. This means if you bet 100 points and lose, you lose all 100 points; if you win, then you get your 100 back and 100 more, or 200 total.

NOTE: After taking the spread into account, a tie means all bets are off; credits bet on either side are returned.

MONEY LINE BETS

For baseball (and hockey and some other sports), scoring is rather low, so point spreads don't make sense. For these wagers, sportsbooks offer what's called a "money line" bet. Here, a wager might look like this:

Red Sox +170
@ Yankees -200

All you have to do is pick the winner of such a game. But if you pick the favorite Yankees, you have to bet 200 points to win 100, or if you pick the underdog Red Sox, you have to bet 100 points to win 170. So the payoff odds are what makes the choice between the two teams a challenge.

FUTURES BETS

These are one-time event bets. They might be on a boxing match (pick the winning fighter) or on a team to win the championship. There is no point spread involved here, just odds. Let's look at the NBA championship as an example. Say the Bulls are 50:1 to win the championship. If you bet 1 point, and the Bulls do win the championship, you get your 1 point back PLUS 50 more points.

You can tell who the oddsmakers (in Vegas) think is going to win the championship by which team has the worst odds. For example, the Spurs might be favored to win the championship and pay 1:1, while the Bulls are much more of a longshot at 50:1.

With futures bets, the odds change over time. The Spurs might be favored 1:1 at the start of the season, but might lose their first 20 games. At that point, they'd hardly be the favorite, so the odds would go up. If Charlotte opened at 450:1 but somehow won their first 35 games, then the odds would certainly fall closer to 1:1 (or even worse payoff).

The odds on futures bets will change roughly once per week.

CAVEATS

1) READ Rule #3 above. If we make a mistake, we'll cancel the bet. If we catch it early, we'll fix the mistake. This means, we'll cancel the bet in error (all points returned) and post a new bet.

It is up to you to check on your bets prior to game time to be assured that they are actually placed.

We obviously don't want to make mistakes, but this is the fairest way to deal with them.

2) We reserve the right to adjust these rules at any time, and without modifying the rules physically in this post. We reserve the right to arbitrate any situations involving the game as we see fit.

SOCCER BETTING

Soccer bets will now be added to the basketballforum vBookie.
The betting is pretty easy to understand. There are 3 options.

Team A wins (3.90) = 4/1
Tie (3.40) = 3/1
Team B wins (1.75) = 2/1

If you put down 1 credits on Team A, you'll get 4 back.
If you put down 1 credits on a Tie, you'll get 3 back.
If you put down 10 credits on Team B, you'll get 20 back.

Also because the bets in Soccer go 2 decimal places, they will be rounded up.

Common sense basically.

I think 1 post equals roughly 15 points. Except in this forum, where they seem to be worth like .10 of a point.

What happens if a baseball game is rained/snowed out? Do we get our bets back or does it just roll over until the game is made up?
