Re: UEFA Cup 2007/8
I don't understand why they feel the need to have 80 teams in the first round.

Re: UEFA Cup 2007/8
I don't see why not. A lot of these teams would otherwise be stuck to playing just league games which can be pretty boring for fans if they are not in the title race. Also, all these teams means more games, which means more revenue.
Kayseri Erciyesspor draws against Atletico Madrid, ****. They were relegated from the Turkcell Super Lig last year but they still somehow managed to be Maccabi Tel Aviv in the previous round.
Galatasaray should move on easily from a Swiss side I've never heard of from before.

Re: UEFA Cup 2007/8
it seems this competition isn't very interesting, huh.
anyway, only 16 teams left, and some interesting matchups. the first legs are currently in play:
FT Anderlecht 0 - 5 Bayern Munich
71' Fiorentina 0 - 0 Everton
71' Marseille 3 - 0 Zenit St. Petersburg
56' Bolton W. 1 - 0 Sporting Lisbon
56' Rangers 2 - 0 Werder Bremen
51' Bayer Leverkusen 0 - 0 Hamburger SV
51' Tottenham H. 0 - 1 PSV Eindhoven
44' Benfica 0 - 1 Getafe
bayern seems to be in the quarter finals..

Re: UEFA Cup 2007/8
I would love to see a Bayern vs. Fiorentina/PSV final.
If Bayern doesn't win this whole thing, it'll be a disappointment for them. They are too talented this year.

Re: UEFA Cup 2007/8
FT
Anderlecht 0-5 Bayern Munich
Tottenham 0-1 PSV Eindhoven
Fiorentina 2-0 Everton
Olympique Marseille 3-1 Zenit St. Petersburg
Rangers 2-0 Werder Bremen
Bolton 1-1 Sporting Lisbon
Leverkusen 1-0 HSV Hamburg
Benfica 1-2 Getafe
Great match between Spurs and PSV, fast paced, high end football by both sides. Though I don't think Ramos made the right decision in playing Gilberto. Once PSV scored that goal they reverted to counter attacking and were quite unlucky not to add a second. I was very impressed with Ibrahim Affelay, should very well be at a top club soon.

Re: UEFA Cup 2007/8
Just out of interest, as it's highly unlikely Tottenham get there via the Premiership, if they win the UEFA Cup, do they play in next years cup?
I don't think they will win it btw.

Re: UEFA Cup 2007/8
spurs have already qualified for the next year's uefa cup - the winner of the league cup gets a place.

Heh, maybe I'm biased but I thought Spurs were terrible, particularly hoofing the ball at Berbatov for the last 20 minutes instead of you know, passing. Ramos pretty much got all his decisions wrong last night (O'Hara instead of Lee, Taraabt instead of Bent), but if anyone deserves a bit of slack from Spurs fans, its him. I too thought Affelay played very well, aside from the sitter he missed to bury the tie.
