Stock's assist record..

I just posted this on the main board, but I just figured out that for someone to break Stockton's career assist total, they would have to play for 12 years, never miss a game, and average over 16 assists per outing.

I don't think he was close to the best player in the league at any time, but John truly was an amazing player, one of the more underappreciated athletes of our time. He didn't have anything to put him ahead of the field other than an unbelievable work ethic and a good head on his shoulders.

ABSOLUTELY he was.

His assist record is one of the most astounding records in sports. Considering no PG might never average well above 10 apg because of how the game is changing (supposed better defense , and NO jump shooters...) that's right up there with the records that will NEVER, EVER be broken.

He did everything you could ask from a true PG, the kind everyone wanted to have on their team. He obviously set up his teammates brilliantly, he hustled, he played D (btw, who's the #1 all time steals leader) and he did the little things (got to the FT line, drew little fouls, made clutch shots).

I never really saw him in his true prime, but from what I hear he was a great player. I can't really comment on being the best player in the league at any time, but I can say that he's probably one of the greatesty players of all time.

Nowadays, the seasonal leader in assists don't even match his career assist average. It'd require a vast shift in the way the game is played for anyone to even come anywhere near his record. Even then though, how many players would be as durable as him?

I'm not an expert enough in general sports to say where his record stands, but it has to be up there for unbreakable career totals.

In every sport there some records that seem unbreakable. But thats why we have records to eventually break them. One day itll be broken but it may stand for a long long long time.

But take if you Multiple Magic's apg to how long and as many games Stockton played he clearly passes him, no pun intended...

Magic couldn't have played 19 seasons at the same level of play. Take Stockton's apg average before he started getting 25 minutes per game and he averaged more assists per than Magic did.

Averaging 16 APG for 12 years without missing a game? Wow.. I knew Stockton had the assists record but this makes it clear how hard it will be for anyone to even come close to breaking it..

The most incredible Stockton record is having played 17 (seventeen) seasons when he didn't miss any game.

Only if we assumed Magic would have no decline in assists per game, which I doubt. Stockton's APG average is higher than Magic's up to the same amount of games they played in their career.
