Jazz fans - would you make this trade

This trade has been discussed on the Chicago board so I thought I would see what you think about it.

Our first round pick (top 3 protected, most likely will be the #7 pick) +fillers

for

Matt Harpring

I wouldn't do it now. I think it will take a better package to get Harpring. The only reason to do this is if you are going to attempt a Chicago style blow up a playoff team and start from scratch rebuild. I don't think the Jazz are looking to do a 5-10 year Chicago style rebuild. They are looking to keep their core guys and use their cap room over the next 2 off seasons to rebuild. I don't think Harpring is really available. It would take at least a young player who is has shown he is ready to break out like Corey Maggette and a future pick.

If stockton and/or malone retire or move on you guys will be a lottery team with our without Harpring. Honestly I don't see that you have much of a core to build around. IMO Utah still needs to get a core for the future (a "core" should include a potential superstar or two not just good players). Harpring is very solid but he cannot lead a team. He is not a star player. So by trading him you have a chance to land a young stud with great potential. Mid level lottery picks have turned out some superstars in the recent past. Plus, you still have AK47 to step into the starting lineup and take his place.

I really don't think its likely that you will get a guy like Maggette as well as a pick for Harpring. IMO you are overvaluing him. The fellas on the Bulls board actually thought that we would be overpaying for him, but he's a good fit so it would be worth it for us.

It would be nice to have a superstar or two but the AK and Harpring are the best the Jazz have other than Stockton and Malone. The Jazz will be looking to use cap room in the free agent market to hopefully land the superstar(s). In the weaker Eastern conference the Bulls have rebuilding the way you suggest for 4+years. Where are they now? In the West rebuilding like that will take at least 5-10 years. The Jazz can't afford that. The franchise would be sold and probably moved before you could complete that kind of rebuild. I have ask this question over and over and no one ever answers it. What NBA Champion has successfully done a Chicago style blow it up and start from scratch rebuild? Has anyone even gotten themselves back to the Jazz current level? To the playoffs? I just don't understand why any team would choose a rebuilding method no one else has successfully done. Most current successful teams have rebuilt with trades and free agency.

Maybe I am overvaluing him. I think what I am actually doing is saying production on the court is worth as much or more than potential. You are doing the opposite. You are saying that potential is more important than production.

I'm a potential man myself.

With pretty much all the stud college underclassmen going pro, we could get a very good player at the #7 pick. If we had a chance to draft a guy like Chris Bosh (has he declared?) or maybe a big man like Chris Kaman, it might be worth giving up Harpring. But Harpring and Kirilenko are likely to be very key guys in this franchise for the next decade or so. And it's tough to give up a 16+ ppg guy for a college player who has proved nothing.

I'd rather pursue some of those young, talented Clipper players who are FAs this offseason. (I believe it's Miller, Maggette, and Brand...)
