O'Connor hedging on Matt
Suddenly O'Connor's sounding not-real-definite about re-signing Matt.
Quote:
O'Connor must decide by July 12 how critical it is to re-sign Harpring, an unrestricted free agent whose performance and grit have made him one of the Jazz's most valuable players during the post-Stockton/Malone years.
There are conflicting issues that impact the situation, the most significant of which is the fact the 30-year-old Harpring has undergone two knee surgeries in 2 1/2 years and - last season - his scoring average dropped to a post-injury low of 12.5 points.
On the other hand, can the Jazz afford to let their most Jerry Sloan-like player simply walk away?
It's a tough call.

It's not automatic that Jazz will bring back Harpring
This will piss me off seriously if they let Matt go.

Re: O'Connor hedging on Matt
They shouldn't let him go, they should offer him a 2 year contract.

Re: O'Connor hedging on Matt
I'd give him 3 years for about 13-18M.

So basically five million a year for three years? Honestly, I think he'd take a little less money in exchange for a longer contract. He's about thirty years old now, and when he's thirty-three he'll find getting another team a lot more difficult. Let's say he's ready to hang 'em up when he's thirty-five--why not make it 16M/5Y? Bet he'd take it to make sure he doesn't have to go through free agency again at age thirty-three.

If we don't get Harp back I say we look to get rasual butler. Or just see what Miles can do.

Not interested in Butler. It's a helluva chance to take, but I'd be willing to go with CJ Miles--I always did like him--if Matt doesn't return.
Man, I hate the idea he might not come back.

I think Butler could be what Bryon Russell and Chris Morris were to us. He can shoot

Re: O'Connor hedging on Matt
HoopsHype, so take it for what it's worth, but this is great news:
Quote:
The Jazz and veteran forward Matt Harpring have reached oral agreement on a long-term deal that will keep the gritty free agent in Utah for a fifth season and likely beyond.
"I know he's pleased to make a decision," Harpring's Atlanta-based agent, Richard Howell, said Tuesday morning. "He and (his) wife feel good about it."
The deal is believed to be four years in length. Financial terms were not immediately made known.

Harpring to re-sign with Jazz
Harpring to stay in utah
Deseret Morning News
The Jazz and veteran forward Matt Harpring have reached oral agreement on a long-term deal that will keep the gritty free agent in Utah for a fifth season and likely beyond.
"I know he's pleased to make a decision," Harpring's Atlanta-based agent, Richard Howell, said Tuesday morning. "He and (his) wife feel good about it."
The deal is believed to be four years in length. Financial terms were not immediately made known.
According to rules of the collective bargaining agreement between the NBA and its players association, the earliest Harpring is permitted to sign the deal is July 12.
"He reached an agreement (Tuesday) morning," Howell said, "and he intends to sign July 12."
Harpring, 30, has played the past four seasons in Utah.
The team co-captain averaged 12.5 points over 71 games last season, and has averaged 14.9 points per game throughout his four years with the Jazz.
Harpring is on vacation and could not immediately be reached for comment.
