Jazz were experimenting with their defense tonight
It was odd. The Jazz hopped out to a quick 9-2 or 11-2 lead in tonight's preseason game against the Blazers.
The thing that I noticed immediately is that they were running a sort of 1-2-2 zone tonight, with Kirilenko at the top of the key, Okur and Boozer manning down low, and Brewer and Williams manning the wings. It was actually a great idea in theory, which may have lead to a lot of Kirilenko's blocks tonight (what did he have, like 7?).
Deron, Brewer, Boozer and Okur all play like a normal box zone. Kirilenko is basically free to roam the floor or suicide down the paint to reinforce with blocks on low post players, basically complimenting EVERY part of his defensive game and just relying on the other guys to rotate properly or just hold their ground.
The one weak point of the defense I saw was deep in the corner, if the guy down low gets screened or something it usually gives them an open shot. However, I also saw Kirilenko rotating to the corners on occasion, and it seems to close them out pretty well.
If the Jazz run this defense it may really frustrate some teams, and we might see some 10+ block games from Kirilenko, and 5+ steal games from Fisher/Brewer since they can play the pass lanes a lot more. It really was something, and if they decide to implement it, it will be really, really interesting to see at full-speed.
I really wish somebody else could have seen this because it was really cool to watch, and in theory, it plays to every strength that Kirilenko has, as a defender.

Re: Jazz were experimenting with their defense tonight
OOOO, so that is what they were doing. I know the jazz were dominating that early. kirilenko had like 3 blocks in 5 minutes, brewer was getting steals left and right. I saw the lead jump to like 13-4. It helped their offensive game with thier good defense early on. I see that starting line up dominating this season.
Really wish I could have seen it

It is really something. The rotations are so goofy. Portland got some open shots but missed all of them until they stopped experimenting and went man.
If they used it against a good outside shooting team they'd probably get killed, but against teams that rely on the post, it'd be awesome.

Re: Jazz were experimenting with their defense tonight
PG: Deron Williams - Derek Fisher - Dee Brown or Brian Chase
SG: Ronnie Brewer - Gordon Giricek - CJ Miles
SF: Andrei Kirilenko - Matt Harpring - CJ Miles
PF: Carlos Boozer - Paul Millsap (he is ready!)
C: Mehmet Okur - Jarron Collins - Hoffa
I am excited right now, this could finally be the jazz's season of 50 wins.

Re: Jazz were experimenting with their defense tonight
By the way, Boozer and Okur both had a big swat tonight. They weren't just coincidentally blocking because their hands were in the air, they saw the ball, timed it right, and swatted it pretty hard both times.
Boozer's D looked pretty good tonight. Okur is still steadily improving.
It'll be interesting what these two during the season, and how our defense evolves. This new set made me really excited.

Re: Jazz were experimenting with their defense tonight
Kirilenkos defense helps everyones defense. That was the differnece between the last game and this game. Boozer 2 blocks, Okur 2 blocks, Kirilenko 6 blocks I could live with that every game!

The concept of the new defense is what has me salivating.
