Jazz release Powell
Jazz release Powell
By Tim Buckley
Deseret Morning News
The Utah Jazz on Thursday released rookie Roger Powell Jr., an undrafted swingman out of the University of Illinois.
The move leaves the Jazz with 13 players on their roster, two below the NBA-mandated maximum, and opens the door for Utah to perhaps soon make a roster addition.
Jazz basketball operations senior vice president Kevin O'Connor said no immediate acquisition is planned. Jazz coach Jerry Sloan, though, said the team may be looking to add a veteran for an eventual playoff push.
Powell appeared in just three games for the Jazz this season but has not played since Nov. 20.
News of his departure hit particularly hard for Jazz point guards Deron Williams and Dee Brown, who were teammates with Powell on the Illini's 2005 NCAA national runner-up team.

Re: Jazz release Powell
Jazz waive little-used Powell
By Phil Miller
The Salt Lake Tribune
Article Last Updated: 01/04/2007 11:41:57 AM MST
The Jazz waived Roger Powell on Thursday, saving themselves nearly a quarter-million dollars in salary but distressing the former teammates of the popular but little-used reserve.
"It gives us flexibility," said Kevin O'Connor, who broke the news to Powell before the 23-9 Jazz practiced Thursday morning. "It's a lousy decision to [make] because he worked very hard, and [because of] the kind of kid he is. But we've been fortunate, knock on wood, that we haven't had injuries. We haven't been able to get him in the games."
Powell was on the active list only five times this season, and played in three games, scoring two points in 13 total minutes. But he was a "first-guy-here, last-guy-in-the-gym" kind of player who worked hard to stay ready, said guard Deron Williams.
He was also close with several of his teammates, especially fellow Illinois alums Williams and Dee Brown.
"He worked hard. He deserved to be here. It's a crazy situation," said Brown, tears pooling in his eyes as he spoke. "He's my brother and I care for him a lot. To see a guy work hard every day, put so much into it . . . He's a strong guy of faith. I hope everything works out for him."

Re: Jazz release Powell
It was fun while he was here. Personally, I was really surprised he even made the team in the first place.
I still wouldn't mind bringing in a good defensive big. If it comes down to bringing back a crapper like Devin Brown or Palacio, don't even bother..

Re: Jazz release Powell
Can't say Im suprised he got cut. He is a fairly decent player and should catch on with a D-League team.

Re: Jazz release Powell
I think saying they have little use for him is an overstatement; the have absolutly no use for him. hell they have 2 guys who never get off the bench as it is in Haffa and CJ.

Re: Jazz release Powell
Had to be a reason to cut him. Who is Utah looking to add? Luke Jackson perhaps?

Re: Jazz release Powell
Illinois pals upset Powell's gone
College teammates Brown, Williams are disappointed
By Tim Buckley
Deseret Morning News
HOUSTON — Tears streamed down Dee Brown's cheeks as he discussed the departure. And he isn't even the one leaving.
Deron Williams looked disgusted. Williams, of course, isn't going anywhere, either.
What had the two former University of Illinois point guards so upset Thursday was the Jazz's decision to waive popular but seldom-used rookie swingman Roger Powell Jr., who started with Williams and Brown on the Illini's 2005 NCAA national runner-up team.
"He worked hard. He worked harder than a lot of dudes. He deserved to be here. It's crazy, man. It's a crazy situation," said Brown, also a rookie. "It's a business. You could easily be selfish and say, 'I'm just happy I'm here,' but that's my brother, man. I care for him a lot."
"Nobody on the team expected this," Williams added. "You know, he's one of the hardest-working guys on the team. One of the first ones in (and) last ones every day, doesn't say nothing at practice, no complaining out of him, does whatever he's asked."
"There's not too much you can tell him," Brown said. "He's a strong guy of faith in God, so everything, hopefully, will work out for him."
Williams also spoke with Powell, who is a licensed Pentecostal minister — and was last seen by a reporter in the Jazz's locker room Wednesday night praying for a teammate's good health.
"Keep your head up. Everything will work out," Williams said when asked what he told Powell. "He's a man of God. He knows everything happens for a reason. God has plans for him."

Jazz cut him because they are paying him to sit on the bench. he hasn't played since the Toronto game back in November, add that to that fact that the Jazz can't find enough time to play Haffa, CJ, Ronnie, or Milsap and you see why they got rid of him.

What do you think will happen? I saw this as "lets not pay someone that has no chance of getting playing time in this deep of a jazz team."

Re: Jazz release Powell
I wouldn't be suprised if the Jazz brought in another guy later down the road. and Larry Miller said something about the team looking for a veteran small forward. which to means sounds like Keith Van Horn. but it also makes me wonder, why are they looking for a veteran three? since the small forward spot is one of the deepest spots on this team and both AK and Harp are healthy. the only explanation I could think of is the Jazz are in talks to move either AK or Harp.
