Sloan not looking for a shooting guard anymore

Quote:
If the decision is as simple as Jazz coach Jerry Sloan made it sound Monday, Gordan Giricek will be in the starting lineup on opening night Oct. 30 at the newly created position of "making guard."
More likely, Sloan couldn't resist having some fun after yet another day passed with a question trying to clear up the mystery of who will start at shooting guard for the Jazz this season.
"Shooting guard?" Sloan said. "We're trying to find a guard that's a making guard. I've heard so much about shooting guards. Anybody can shoot it. We're just trying to get somebody that's going to make 'em at that position."
A "making guard".. ahahahah! Quite the rare showing of Sloan's humor here.

Love the Sloan humor!

Does that mean he's come to grips with Giricek not playing D?

Re: Sloan not looking for a shooting guard anymore

Actually, Giricek puts a lot of effort in on defense. He's not as quick as other defenders, but he does body up and crowd a lot, and again, noticably puts in a lot more effort than he gets credit for.

Even if he is a below-average defender, his offensive efficiency seems too good to overlook. He shot 42% from 3, and 46% from the field on the season. Not sure why he wasn't used more often..?

Re: Sloan not looking for a shooting guard anymore

^ It's not his defensive ability that's lacking, but it seemed at times that he wasn't serious about it.
