This is what always amazes me or baffles me about some players, when it comes to money or rings:

<b>"With Stockton and Malone almost single-handedly sending the Jazz over the salary cap, there was not enough money left over to sign the kind of player who could transform them into a title contender again."</b>

I have no inside sources but from listening to both sides and a little reading between the lines this what I think happened. At the start of last season the Jazz said they wanted Russell back and he was a big part of the future but wait until the season is over. Russell understood this to mean I will get a new contract with pay raises. I think the promises were very general and I don't think he was promised what he says. He had a bad year and no one was spending money in the free agent market. The Jazz wanted Russell to sign for one or two year deal for the vet minimum for a player of his experience. Russell and/or his agent balked at this. The Jazz signed Cheaney to the same deal to replace him. Bye-bye Bryon Russell. It is a good move if Russell wouldn't sign the deal Cheaney did and Cheaney can stay healthy this year. They will have a lot of cap room next year. I wonder who they will go after. I still think both Stockton and Malone will come back next year but at more reasonable more cap friendly salaries.

Like the Bulls, the jazz are at a crossroads...time to either ship malone and stockton out, OR, have their contracts restructured to enable the organization the ability to sign other quality players. Maybe Jordan and the Rest of the Bulls proved to the rest of the world that as long as these two guys are still in utah, the jazz have no chance of winning a championship? just a thought.
