That is my biggest concern when dealing with free agents that have pulled an ´Ostertag´ by doing well during their contract year, getting the big money then sucking for the 4-6 years we sign them for. Is there a big man out there who we could pull away from a team with money and draft picks.

Give the guy a break. He has been pretty consistent from year to year, even if he was consistently iffy at times. We could do worse the Ostertag, but only if we pay him modest money. He deserves a pay cut now he's getting older. And for goodness sake don't give him more than a 2 year contract.
I'd love to get Dampier or Stro, and I think Okur would jump at the chance to start and get major minutes.

There are four tiers of centers in the league in my opinion.
STARS
Shaq
Yao
WORK HORSES
Brad Miller
Theo Ratliff
Ben Wallace
OVER PRICED SPACE OCCUPIERS
Ostertag
Shawn Bradley
Jerome James
NBDL PLAYERS
Olowakandi
Obviously I could be a lot harder on Tag. I am just tired of players that make 8 million a year that get more excited when hunting or fishing season starts then when basketball season starts. Call me blue collar, but I expect people should perform or at least give an effort that is somewhat equivalent to their salary.

This is just a good example of the owner, the gm, and the coach all being on the same page. If the owner has a vision and knows what he wants, he will get a gm that knows how to translate what the owner wants into getting players that both fit the mold of the owners vision and the coaches ability. The coach will then extract the talents necessary to produce results that mirror the wants of the gm and owner.
The reason that the jazz system works in Utah is because the owner is from here he was made here. He has a good idea what the populous wants. In my opinion the jazz fan market wants a team that works hard that scraps and of course wins. The jazz I think are the franchise of the decade. Not because of rings bought by brining in classless thugs and perverts (lakers). But by producing a product that met and exceeded the expectations and was a team that the community could be proud of. With the exception of the spurs, the recent champions (lakers) have a community that is ´look at what I got proud` of their team but has to make excuses for or hide the truth about their players.
The jazz will always be the nice guy that might never finish first, but ´first´, in ten years will be considered a relative term that wasnt defined from the end result but the path that was taken to greatness that ´first´really is.

I think the Jazz should avoid Damp like the plague. He's having a good contract year(bad sign) and he's old. Take this as advice from someone who gets to see him on local TV, I don't want him next season(unless it's cheap) and I don't really envy the team who gets him.
I think the Jazz should seriously consider trying to steal Okur from Detroit, go for Stro, maybe see if they can get Chris Andersen and Rodney White, take a stab at Daniels and then stand pat this off-season. Beyond the big-time agents, there's not alot of quality in this FA class, and the big names likely won't sign with Utah.
I think Utah's best bet going forward is to spend their money wisely, signing guys that are overlooked and looking for an opportunity. Save your money for later and build through the draft for another season. And I don't really think they need any vets, those guys will just eat up salary for marginal gains, and Sloan is good enough mentor.

Anyway watchout for the sheep in wolves clothing. Dampier could turn into Ostertag 2.0 especially under Sloans system. Now, A guy like Gasol, who may be up for bids would really turn things around Especially playing next to ostertag.

Anyone who thinks Dampier would play worse next year doesn't know Sloan! Nobody gets away with slackign - everyone plays hard. Dampier could well thrive under Sloan. DOn't forget he'd be playing for a successful franchise for the first time. That would give him motivation too.

Memphis and Gasol have yet to agree on a new contract. Pau may be asking for too much money. He is intriguing.
