Jazz May Move Up in Draft

Quote:
The Jazz are actively exploring opportunities for trading away one of their three first-round selections in next month's NBA Draft.
If they did so, player personnel director Walt Perrin suggested Monday, it probably would be so they could pick sooner in the draft's opening round.
"That's one of the options," Perrin said.
There are several other options for the Jazz, who will go into the summer's free-agency market well under the NBA's team payroll salary cap — and probably won't have roster room for three rookies next season.
"We have probably more flexibility to do things than any team in the league. We can do a lot of different things," Perrin said. "That's why Kevin (O'Connor, the Jazz's basketball operations senior vice president) and I are in an ongoing process of talking to teams to see if there is a possibility of moving up."
If they do not move into one of the draft's top three spots by striking gold in next week's NBA Draft Lottery, the Jazz will own the Nos. 14, 16 and 21 picks in the June 24 draft.

Would you like to move up or having 3 first rounders are a better choice?

This would have been an easy question to answer if the jazz had gone 20-62 instead of 42-40. If the previous record were the case then a "rebuilding" mentality comes into play. With that comes more patience with current jazz players and giving draft picks plenty of time to develop. And in my opinion that is what most of this years draft requires. Time to develop. It seems that each year there are more high schoolers and euros. This means that teams that have poor records are willing to sit on a guy for a couple of years to let him learn the game.
Having a 42-40 record and a coach like Jerry Sloan the whole "rebuilding" mentality has gone up a couple of levels. The jazz are in more need of players that they can use now. So trading up is a good idea. Then pursuing free agents. Like I have said in the past, I am a bulls fan and I wish that they could have had the type of "rebuilding" process that the jazz had.

I'd like to move up as well.

On a related note, I've heard we're working out Jameer Nelson.. I can't possibly imagine us doing that unless the Jazz brass have plans to a) expose Mo in the exp. draft and expect to lose him or b) trade Arroyo.. interesting.

I am not sold on moving up, this years draft is pretty deep, the chance to get a great talent with 3 first rounders are high. Plus, the Jazz is pretty good at finding talent with lower picks.

The problem I see in keeping all three picks is that the jazz have quite a few players currently on contract. To draft three players in the first they have guaranteed contracts and take up precious roster spots. To me it doesn't make sense with 30 million in cap space. Cap space and roster spots which can be used to bring in a proven veteran. It would be a mistake to take a step back and work on developing 3 players. Having a roster of rookies and at the most third year players will make it difficult to improve on a 42-40 record.

Well I would hope they keep at least 2 first rounders, possibly losing one by moving way up.

The only way you can move up with only giving up one pick is by including a player. The only reason to move up is to chase someone you really covet. So that means getting into the top ten. Remember the bulls had to give up Elton Brand to move into the top three. My opinion is to give up 14 & 21 to move up into the top five. It really depends on how the lottery comes out. I think there are teams out there that will be willing to get out of a high lottery spot for more depth. Teams that have the developmental mind set. Remember, the jazz finished with a 42-40 record. Doing worse than that is a bit of a failure. Don't get me wrong, the jazz are most definately rebuilding. They're new foundation is a 42-40 record and they are going from that. To do so will require going for someone in the top ten (which is where all the stars come from) and getting some good players with free agency. I think Kevin O'Connor and Jerry Sloan are just the two that can do it.

I am not so sure about this, but this could be not true anymore, with so much young players entering in the draft, a lot of potential stars can slip out of the top 10. I didn't do any research but I am pretty positive that Kobe, Jermaine O'Neal, Ron Artest, Zach Randolph, Tony Parker and even AK-47 and Harpring were selected out of the top 10.

But I see your point about developing too much young guys at the same time and having a lot of players under contract. Getting good players via FA is probably the safest (and maybe wiser) way to keep upgrading this team.
