Peter John Ramos
A reason to smile about this pick ...
Quote:
Grunfeld has had success drafting in the second round.
When he was general manager of the Milwaukee Bucks he plucked Ronald Murray out of obscure Shaw University in North Carolina with the 42nd overall pick in the 2002 draft. The Bucks traded Murray as part of the deal to obtain Gary Payton and Desmond Mason. Since then, Murray has become one of the SuperSonics' top reserves.
Grunfeld also selected Ohio State guard Michael Redd with the 43rd pick in the 2000 draft. Redd averaged 21.7 points and five rebounds last season and earned a spot in the 2004 All-Star Game.

Combine Grunfeld's eye for players in the second round with the fact that Ramos was considered a first round talent by many leading up to the draft, and we may have gotten another legit player in the second round. Plus, on the chance that's he's a dud, at least he's a 7'4 300 pound dud.
He wasn't one of the guys I had my eye on leading up to the draft, but that's because I expected him to be gone no later than the early to mid twenties. He certainly sounds like a project from what I've read, but if we hang on to this kid, we may have a real keeper a couple years down the road.

I actually don't believe he's that big of a project. I think he can be solid for us off the bench while he gets used to the NBA.
They are alot of terrible centers playing ball. He's a good athlete and he has some offensive skills. At 7'3-7'4 he can throw himself in the way defensively.
For 15 minutes a game he can be solid and against some teams he'll score points for us.
I don't ever expect him to be dominant, or an allstar but he has a chance to be solid right away. He can be really good if he works hard he's young and talented. But solid play requires little as a sub at center in this league.

I read an article that he's going to be playing for us this year, I think he can be a pretty good contributor off the bench.
It's a good because their's not much risk involved. He's a 2nd round pick, so even if he's a bust ala Jared Jeffries, it still would of been worth taking him because he's a 7'3 and we got him in the second round.
We should still keep Etan, but theirs no doubt that Ramos can eventually be known as the steal in the draft. Draft City even commented that he could be the best young Center in the Southeast Divison.

Another Question, Is Haywood starting at the 5 or does he come off the bench?

At this point, I'd expect so see the same starting lineup as last year with Jamison swapped in for Stackhouse. In actuality, we'd even have the same bench for the most part -- Blake at PG, Dixon at SG, Hayes at SG/SF, Jeffries at SF/PF, and Etan at PF/C if he resigns. If Ramos comes over we could add a third guy at center (and considering Haywood and Etan both played only 20 MPG or so last year, a third could cover the remaining minutes). Also if we sign that defensive swingman we almost all want, we can bump Dixon from the rotation, put Hayes exlusively at backup SG, and have the signee at backup SF.
We'd have a monster rotation if everything came to pass, with at least 10 guys playing every night and as many as all 12 getting in depending on how the game's going. I'm not much of a fan of that, preferring to rely on 8-9 guys consistently, but there's probably no chance of us having a small rotation with our roster.

Looking at that we really need a backup SG with some tenacity and some defnsive abilities. We are a little thin there now.

I've always thought our odd depth was a problem last season. Having too many players to close together in skill makes young players unhappy and start to playing with suspicious motives.
I'm like you I'd rather only play 8 or 9 guys.
I agree we need the defensive stopper.
I'll tell you what I'd watch JJ rather closely, maybe up to the trading deadline. If he still looks like he doesn't have a clue than I'd trade him for that defensive swingman we all want if we don't get one in free agency.
We gotta come out the box next year really strong.
Getting Jamison who's played with 4 of our 5 starters is HUGE. He won't have much of that odd new guy learning curve to worry about he'll have the feel for everyones game already.
He and Kwame makes us one of the quickest frontlines in the league. Both guys cat quick oh yeah thats gonna be fun to watch.
Kwame could learn a trick or 2 from Jamison about those flip shots and using the right angles to take.
