Defense

Collins has really stressed defense with the Wizards in the offseason and that was a big reason the Wizards went oout and got Larry Hughes, to play D on opposing PGs and to get biger on the perimeter in general.

It has worked and the Wizards are tops in the league in defense but our offense has yet to find it's way. One encouraging thing is that the Wizards are playing good fundamental defense with little zone. This would mean that there won't be problems like the T'wolves had last year when teams started to figure out what the deal with their zone was.

Another big reason for the defensive turnaround has been Kwame Brown's presense. The other team has to start looking for him on defense. Hopefully they keep it up and the Wizards continue the trend of low scoring and low opponent FG%.

If Kwame continues the way he's been playing, teams are going to have to account for him more and more in their gameplanning.

Getting new players to play together on defense is a lot harder than offense, so it might be a great sign of things to come.

Or they could turn into a "Heat" type team this year which I'm sure you'll love BCH, lol.

If they ever get to be as boring as the Heat, I'll be sure to rail on them as much as I do on the Heat.

The likelyhood of that is slim to none though, because there is only one Pat Riley and he is busy destroying the Miami franchise.

The Wiz also have a lot more interesting season sub-plots to watch than the Heat do. Even if the Wiz scored 65/game they'd still be interesting to watch.

The main wrinkle I like about the Wizards defensive scheme is when they get the pg to make the opposing pg to turn his back while handling the ball and the bring a guy over to jump the pg and trap him, this causes turnovers and also it takes time off the shot clock forcing the team to reset its offense, also the Wizards are picking up their men closer to half court and they leave Kwame back lingering for the penetration, Kwame is becoming a factor now which allows the Wizards perimeter players more aggression on the edges. I do feel that the Wiz will struggle probably all year with the scoring wih MJ and Stackhouse being 40% shooters, no one other than Lue in their top 8-9 guys can consistently stroke it unless Dixon emerges as a threat, which doesn't seem likely right now.

Defense is utterly useless for the wiz unless they can muster up offense, i'd rather that the wizards were going head to head in shoot out's then brick contests.
