Arenas suitable at the PG?
I'm starting to wonder if the Washington Wizards should get someone else the run the point guard position instead of Arenas. Arenas did average over 4 turnovers per game this past season.
Arenas can play the 2 but the Wizards will still need someone who can guard taller 2 guards much like the 76ers have Eric Snow to complement Allen Iverson.
Larry Hughes could run the point but as his past shows, not very well.
A viable option is Jamal Crawford, who is a 6'6 point guard, but takes more shots that Larry Hughes per 48 minutes. He did average 2.4 TO per game.
Preferably, the Wizards can get somebody who can pass the ball, doesn't take a lot of shots, and plays good defense.
Any suggestions? Or should the Wizards hope that Arenas develops these PG skills?

Arenas is better than Crawford at the point so that wouldnt be the solution. I think Arenas can be a great point in the league.

I'd give Arenas time. He's a hard worker, he should be a much better PG now that he has legit offensive options around him and a guy who can catch the ball and finish.

I don't think Arenas can be considered a complete combo yet incapable of running a team. The Princeton offense is very difficult for a pg to learn and adapt to. Arenas who was prone to to's before I think never got comfortable with the Wizards roster because of all the injuries.
I'm betting after a summer of tutoring by Eddie Jordan he plays much better.
Not a fan of Crawford's at all. Something about his atitude I don't like. Arenas has his problems but I always thought they were out of a competitve effort than a selfish one.
Crawford maybe because of how he's been treated by the Bulls always plays like he's trying to prove he can play by shooting the ball. They keep bringing players in to replace him, Jay Williams, Hinrich and now maybe Gordon. I'd be uptight if I were him also.

Arenas is fine the way he is. You take away a lot of his rebounds if he's not matching up with the point. He is a great passer, a great penetrator, and by his going to see the Nets play to watch Jason Kidd, he shows that he wants to learn how to be a better point guard.

I think Arenas could soon become the BEST point guard in the league, hands down. He's got all the tools, and I can't understand why other fans seem to think we need to move him to the 2.

1) He averages 4.11 turnovers per game. That is second in the league only behind Allen Iverson. And he ranks number 1 in turnovers per 48 minutes (5.25)
2) He has a bad habit of taking bad shots. He shot 39% last year
3) Kwame Brown has been complaining about not getting enough touches during games. Do the Wizards need another point guard who will feed Brown the ball? Especially since a backcourt of Arenas as well as Hughes are known to take a lot of shots.
4) Even in Golden State, Arenas didn't play pg all the time, as Boykins played during crunch time.
He is 22 though and could develop into a better PG.

like you said, he's really young but shows tremendous potential. as a young PG in the NBA you try things you're not sure will work. you are more daring considering you're unsure with the enviroment and most of the time your teammates. Gilbert is new to his teammates so that also puts a little spice on his turnover problem.
he will be a Top 5 PG in the future in the NBA.

I can't accept that Arenas is very young therefor mistakes are okay. I don't think he'll ever be top 5 as a pg in the league that doesn't mean he can't be a game changer. He could become alot like Billups. A very savy good shooting pg. He doesn't get a ton of assists but he doesn't turn it over alot and he has a nice outside shot.
Thats all we need really. He doesn't have the instincts to be a natural ball distributor ,it doesn't come 2nd nature to him. Guys like Jkidd, Marbury, Baron Davis passing comes naturally.
I think Arenas's potential lies as one of the games best combo guards. he could be the very best of that catergory if it is one.

I dunno, personally I'd quite like to have Crawford here. With a real home, I think he'd kind of blossom, and he's a better ball handler than Arenas is. He does shoot too much, but on the offense starved Bulls last year pretty much all of their guys looked worse they they really are. In reality, I tend to think that he passes well and doesn't turn the ball over very much.
As with anything Arenas-related, I think the issue is figuring out how to get him on board with whatever gets done. If he'll buy into playing with a guy like Jamal, that'd be good. If he won't, it won't matter who we bring in.

I'm saying Arenas COULD be the best PG in the league. He could. I'm not saying he is right now. However, he does have some amazing skills- he can drive on anyone, shoot it from anywhere, and dunk with the best of 'em. He's absolutely one of the fastest players in the league. That makes for a pretty nice player- once he gets older and more mature and more experience running an offense, his turnovers will come down. As is, I'd still prefer him over probably 20 other starting PGs in the league.

From that description, of "somebody who can pass the ball, doesn't take a lot of shots, and plays good defense" that would eliminate Jamal Crawford. I like him a lot, but he prefers creating for himself and relaxing on defense. I would rather have Arenas playing the 1 and JC playing the 2. Arenas IMO is a more natural playmaker, although JC has the better handles. I think we should wait for Arenas to develop better decision making and take better care for the ball.

I'm not saying trade him or bench him; just put him at the 2 and set up the offense through him like Iverson. I think he can be a top 5 pg eventually, but he'd develop into top 5 sg faster.
Especially in the crunch time, the Wizards need to have a pg much like Golden State had with Boykins. This simply may mean putting in Blake or someone else in free agency that could also guard the two.
I don't know much about Jamal Crawfod really, but he is 6'6 but seems to be a ball hog. He averages more shots in 48 minutes than Hughes. The Wizards have bigger needs like resigning Etan or possibly getting another big man
If the Wiz could get him at a low value though, I wouldn't mind if they signed him. The Bulls may not want him since they already Ben Gordon and Kirk Hinrich.

It's as simple as at the end of games going with a line-up of-
Blake
Arenas
Hughes
Jamison'
Kwame
Last year I really liked whenever we had Blake and Arenas in the backcourt. I remember an overtime game against the Hornets where Blake found Arenas for 2 straight 3 pointers and than Blake took Baron to the hoop for a layup.
Blake at PG at the end of games is definetly a good idea, it lets Arenas focus on scoring.

I think this year will tell the tale on whether the Arenas PG experiment was a success or not. All of your points are valid, and remind of the LH pointguard experiment.
Still Arenas is nothing if not a hardworker so you don't really know.
Next season when Jarvis and Kwame are older, wiser and better should be a good gauge.
