If we lose Etan Thomas in free Agency. The Washington Times said we're not likely to match Thomas's contract. I think we should cut Juan Dixon if possible and take a shot at Rasheed Wallace.
Releasing Dixon to go with say our 9 mill in cap space gets us to 10 mill. I say we throw it at Rasheed.
Now do I think Rasheed would accept probably not, BUT consider this, he's always talked of liking DC actually he said he loved it here and he knows the city, were close to his hometown of Philly and adding jamison makes us a team on the rise in many people's eyes.
I think the only reason he hasn't commited to Detroit yet because his family isn't sure they want to live in Detrot.
I say why not make the attempt, won't happen probably but who knows.

Anyone else get the feeling letting Etan walk is a prelude to getting Dampier?

I just posted in the Etan thread, and that is now my worst case scenario. Let Etan go, throw all the cap space at Dampier. I shudder at that possibility. I'd rather have Etan back at his price than bring in Dampier at his price.
My suggestion from that thread was to split the money among two solid if unspectacular guys. I named Eric Williams and Bob Sura there, but I'm sure there's plenty of role player types who could do something for us. Chris Anderson is another name that just popped into my head. I don't have a FA listing to look at at the moment, but doing something to that effect would make me infinitely more happy than giving the money all to Dampier.
jazzy's idea is worth a shot though. I agree that Rasheed probably doesn't have the Wizards on his radar right now, but last year I didn't think Arenas did either. You've got to make an offer first, then you can gauge their interest.

I think we should still make a run at signing Bruce Bowen so we don't allow 40 point players to score on us (Lebron, McGrady, Crawford, Kobe). If not him then we should try to get Rasheed, if not him then maybe Ostertag??

Rasheed already has a 50 million 4 year deal in place to come back to Detroit. He loves the fans and the city. Joe Dumars has been around his house for a week working his basketball camps. He likes winning to much to leave Detroit.

Funny how Sheed hasn't agreed to resign yet. if there's so much love.
Ernie G is real tricky. I actually think he hopes Etan leaves, I think a last minute KMart thing could happen, Rasheed, who knows Ernie isn't the type gm that will be left unprepared he's just not one who shows his wholecard and quite frankly I like how he operates.

I so don't want Dampier its ridiculous.
But Shaq is coming to the division and we're gonna need some big bodies.
I'm telling you all these Warriors are not a good look.

That Washington Times article was wrong. We will only have 9-10 million to spend if the cap goes up to 49-50 million.
If it was a case where we could just have 9-10 mil, this wouldn't even be a discussion, we would of let Etan go a long time ago and gone after a high priced FA.
Realistically, if we let Etan go we'll have 5, maybe 6 million in capspace.
We gotta use the money on a veteran big man. Our frontcourt gets really thin without Etan and we can't rely on Jeffries to be any good next year.

Are you sure, we have our MLE plus we'd have the space Thomas's contract had this season which is 3 mill and change that would give us 8 mill right there.
Not 5 or 6.

That's true. Looking through a few sources, we'll have a total salary of $39-40 million with a cap of around $45-46 million. That is a blessing in disguise most likely, because we won't get Dampier with that. What we can get is what I was talking about, a mid-tier FA or maybe even two if we're lucky. I'm not greedy though, and if we can land a Chris Anderson or an Eric Williams and keep the rest of our team as is, I'll be plenty happy.

You only get the MLE if you are over the cap. If you're under the cap (which we are without Etan), you get whatever amount you're under the cap. I'm not sure exactly what happens if you're under the cap and you sign someone to move over the cap -- do you get an MLE then, or no? My guess is not, but does anyone know for sure?
