Ailing Wizards enter toughest part of schedule
Quote:
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Washington Wizards will have to limp across the finish line if they're to make the playoffs for the first time in eight years.
Usual iron-man Antawn Jamison is sidelined indefinitely with a sore knee and back, having lasted just eight minutes in his latest game. Gilbert Arenas needs rest for his aching knee, but he doesn't know when he'll get it because of the cramped schedule. The bodies of Kwame Brown, Juan Dixon, Anthony Peeler and Jarvis Hayes are in various states of disrepair.
``It's hard to practice,'' center Brendan Haywood said. ``Last week, we had to play 3-on-3. It's tough. I've never experienced anything like this, but hopefully we can get through it.''
The Wizards are 34-27, high-rent area for a team that hasn't made the playoffs since 1997 and hasn't won a playoff game since 1988. But they are about to start the stretch that coach Eddie Jordan has eyed warily all season: Seven of the next eight are on the road, crammed into 13 days, starting Wednesday night at Atlanta.
``We're trying to hold down the fort -- really, it's beyond holding down the fort, because this is probably who we've got,'' Jordan said. ``Juan's probably the only one who can come back and really be healthy. Antawn's going to struggle. Jarvis is going to be out, maybe until the playoffs, maybe not coming back at all.''
