Rotation

Alright, at this point we pretty much have our full roster, or at least the everyone that is going to play on a game by game basis. So, let's figure out what kind of rotation we should expect to see on any given night. Here's one I've come up with:

PG: Arenas (30), Daniels (18)
SG: Daniels (14), Caron (14), Hayes (10), Arenas (10)
SF: Caron (22), Jeffries (12), Jamison (8), Hayes (6)
PF: Jamison (30), Ruffin (12), Jeffries (6)
C: Haywood (28), Etan (18), Ruffin (2)

Note that there is a little room for sharing. Anytime Arenas + Daniels or Jeffries + Jamison or something like that are in the game together, they can play interchangeably.

Also note how scarce minutes have become for backups that are used to a lot more. From last year to this, Jeffries goes from 26 to 18, Hayes from 28 to 16, Atkins from 35 to 0 (!). I tried to find room for Atkins, but in doing so, you basically eliminate the minutes of Hayes. No matter which way you slice it, someone who's used to being a major rotation guy is going to be reduced way down. I don't think we're going to do that to Jeffries (though he still takes his hit), so it'll be either Hayes or Atkins who suffers most. That's what happens when you lose two guys who played 58 minutes a night while missing 60ish games over the course of the year and add three who played 98 minutes a night and missed 10ish games over the course of a year. Someone going down with an injury should "help" the situation somewhat, but that's probably not what we want to be hoping for.

So, anyone got any other ideas? Does Daniels have too many minutes (+5 over his career high)? Should Atkins be squeezed in, one way or another? Do you have some bizarre notion that one of the young guns (Blatche, Ramos, etc) will find his way into some minutes this season? And so on.

Re: Rotation

Atkins will be the primary back-up PG behind Arenas. Daniels was brought in to play SG in place of Hughes. I don't think Atkins won't get any playing time. And Hayes needs to get traded because he isn't getting any better here with the back-up in the SG/SF position. He has the potential to become an all-star player. Anyone else agree?

Re: Rotation

The problem is, how does Atkins get minutes? Like I said, the only way I see as at all possible that he gets anything is if you bump someone else (most likely Hayes) out of the rotation completely. Either way, someone isn't going to get much more than scraps.

"That would be a bad deal," Fortson said. "He might want to keep that one in the closet."

Re: Rotation

Did you guys see Arenas at the charity game? He's probably the bulkiest PG in the league. His outside jumper looked pretty automatic though.

Re: Rotation

I was really surprised to see Arenas there, he wasn't on the announced roster (last time I checked anyways). Bulky definitely was the word to describe him. He played some good ball, even if the game didn't mean anything in that regard.

Re: Rotation

What about Peter Ramos?

PG: Arenas, Atkins
SG: Daniels, Hayes, Taylor
SF: Caron, Jeffries
PF: Jamison, Ruffin, Blatche, Fuller
C: Haywood, Etan, Booth, Ramos

Seems like a pretty deep team a solid starting 5 and bench. It will be fun to watch them this year.

Re: Rotation

Ramos will down in the NBDL, along with Blatche and probably Taylor. If he (or any of them) are on the main roster at any point in time, they'll almost certainly be at the end of the bench, playing only garbage minutes at best.

Of course, we can always hope they prove to be worthy of regular minutes so early in their careers
