Wizards' Draft - The 18th Pick
I would hate to see us end up with Josh Boone. I am not sure how likely that is, but I would cry. I want a big in my heart but we have Blatche and Ramos that are going to need some time, or do we just forget about them? Hayes is a SG, but is he the answer? I have no idea what to do. It is almost to the point you want them to package some guys up and improve, while making room, but who would want Etan Thomas realistically?
In my mind EG has a ton of work to do this summer. I wouldn't necessarily mind him taking the best available player big or small with the 18th pick, and then concentrating on getting the guys we have in house better and/or healthy. If Ramos, Blatche, and Taylor step up and make contributions, and if Hayes gets healthy and improves somewhat, we are a whole different team. Even with Etan and Haywood still on the team.
Wouldn't it be nice to get a really defensive oriented player like a Wallace and then have the big 3 play with him, and Jeffries as well I guess. I dont see it happening in this draft. I guess I can see the Wizards taking a guy like Splitter because to be honest, there isnt that much room this year, because they have so many irons in the fire.
Anyway, these are just some of my thoughts. I'd almost say trade the 18th just to get rid of Etan at this point.

Re: Wizards' Draft - The 18th Pick
We should do something about the bench. AD was a great pickup last year...we need to target more tested veterans like that that will be happy and play well coming off the bench. I'm just gonna wait and see about the bigs cause Haywood isn't the long term solution, but I think our hands may be tied at this point.

Re: Wizards' Draft - The 18th Pick
I'm not worried about taking a big just because we've got Blatch and Ramos. The way I see it, if they can step up, they'll step up and play and we can kick a guy like Thomas to the curb.
I'm not sure Jeffries will be back, though I think he will. He's a good compliment to Jamison but he's just such a funky player that I wouldn't overpay for him at all.
I think we need to look at a big guard. JJ sort of played that role for us and CB4 was better at the 3. Given the vast array of injuries I don't think Jarvis Hayes can be relied on to return to form, and even healthy his form was nothing special. That being said, we could certainly stand to land a big bruising guy too.
So basically the best player available seems like a good bet to me. Some guys who I think might be good fits:
Rudy Fernandez - Sounds like a badass, but obviously nobody's seen him.
Richard Roby - Likely to be there, and on paper can do everything, but it's unclear if he cares about basketball
Mardy Collins - Could take over Jeffries role as a defensive big guard, and his point guard skills would be a nice complement to Arenas.
JJ Redick - Might fall to us, and while he'll be a defensive seive we could certainly use a three point specialist.
Saer Sene - huge wingspanned big guy
I sort of doubt O'Bryant, Armstrong, or Sheldon Williams is still there at the Wizard's pick, but if they are they'd look like good guys to take.

Re: Wizards' Draft - The 18th Pick
i am a long time arenas-basher (might be too strong of a term) who always believed to run EJ's offense the right way we needed a more pass first PG. What would you guys think of drafting rajon rondo?? I didnt see alot of him at UK but his assist numbers from OHill+UK are just outrageous. Do you think arenas would still be as effective without the ball in his hands as much?? Would he just be a waste with ADaniels on the team now??

I'm a UK fan too, and I'm not a big fan of Rondo. As a long term project I think he could come along pretty well- he does have phenomenal physical skills. But I don't know that he's got a very good head.

What would have been good for the Wizards is if Ogden went to the NBA

Re: Wizards' Draft - The 18th Pick

Re: Wizards' Draft - The 18th Pick
If the Wizards do not find a good player where they are at I would be open for trading the #18 for a 1st round pick next year. As it stands though, the Wizards should pick the best player available especially since they appear to need more depth at every position.
The Wizards do not have a true point guard to come off the bench nor a prototypical starting 2 guard. Another 2 or 3 position to cover the likes of Lebron James is a team need especially because JJ is a free agent and Jarvis Hayes is questionable to ever return to full health. The Wizards also lack a consistent post game from both the offensive and defensive end, which suggests that they could potentially take a big.

Re: Wizards' Draft - The 18th Pick
So, team needs aside, and taking into consideration who might be there at 18, who do you want? Think Wizards go with the Best Player Available plan.
Tiago Splitter would work for me, even if he doesn't come over right away. It sounds like he plays within himself, and from what I have seen, he does ok.
I like Shannon Brown. I know he probably doesn't have a role on this team with Donnel Taylor, but I like him none the less.
Cedric Simmons. I like the prospect of having someone on the post that really plays defense. Not Etan "Let me flail my elbows cause I want to look like I am tough, even though I really am not" Thomas, or Brendan "I've already played well for five games this year, so wait until next year" Haywood.
My list is pretty short, and outside of some of the top guys, if we dont get one of these 3 or a guy I have never heard of like Saer Sene, or Oleksiy Pecherov, I will probably be disappointed. If we get one of the guys I have never heard of, I will just be somewhat apathetic, while trusting the judgement of Grunfield and crew somewhat.

Re: Wizards' Draft - The 18th Pick
You guys seem realy down on Etan...was he that bad a backup this year? As a Raptor's fan I was looking forward to seeing if we could have made a move for him last off season. If he can rebound, bock some shots and set screens I would be happy.....Also was Haywood that bad as well, I know he was a little inconsistant, but you have three studs in Gilbert, Jamison, and Butler, what are you expecting from your big men?
I like the Wizz, I think you are very close to getting over the hump...but do you need a big piece to get there, or just some added togetherness after the first season as a full unit?
The draft could give you a nice 8-10th man for the rotation.

Etan is the worst player on the team by far.

Re: Wizards' Draft - The 18th Pick
I'd like to see a trade. The draft isn't looking deep at all this year. I'd be looking for any type of decent role player or a future 1st rounder in return.

Re: Wizards' Draft - The 18th Pick
I'm not sure if any team is willing to give up 2007 first round draft picks since it's supposed to be so talented.
And I agree that Etan Thomas is pretty terrible. I'd even say he's one of the overpaid/worthless players in the league.
I wouldnt mind seeing Redick in a Wizards uniform. Though I'm not sure how Terp fans would react cheering for him.
