Jamison, a former North Carolina Tar Heel, is referring to Mike Krzyzewski, the Duke head basketball coach and also the new coach of the U.S. Senior National Team. Coach K gets to pick among 23 of the best U.S. players to form his team, which will also represent America in the 2006 FIBA world championships in late August. (The Charlotte Bobcats' Adam Morrison will also participate in the tryout, which will begin July 19).
Players like Jamison don't face the possibility of being cut often.
"Honestly," Jamison said, "it's been a while since the words `trying out' and `Antawn Jamison' have been in the same sentence."
Now they are. Of the players invited to Las Vegas for the week-long tryout, it is expected about 13-15 will make Coach K's initial cut July 25. Eventually, that number will be winnowed to 12.
Jamison lobbied for a shot at the Olympic team. He was frustrated at the string of uninspiring performances put together by the 2004 U.S. Olympic squad, which only won a bronze medal.
