Here are the alleged reasons:
Quote:
|
A team source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Associated Press that Pollin's decision was based on three reasons: player dissension, a franchise faltering after 3½ years of Jordan in charge, and deteriorating relationships throughout the organization.
|
Player dissension? I had not realized the had ever won anything. Hilarious.
A franchise faltering? What a complete joke. Jordan has been playing the last two years so the 3 1/2 years is misleading. The Wizards have also been better than they have in a long while other than in 97 which was before Unseld traded Webber.
Deteriorating relationships? This takes the cake. You mean someone has a problem with Susan O'Malley, that hasn't happened before has it? Pollin should just sell the team.
The Wizards return to their previous ways.

At least Wes Unseld is unavailable to replace MJ. At least he is supposed to be unavailable.
Wes taking over again would be the final straw for me.

Actually, the deteriorating relationship with Pollin and O'Malley seems to be the primary reason for the split. At least this was acknowledged.

From the official release...
http://www.nba.com/wizards/news/jordan_030507.html
Quote:

“I want to emphasize my sincere thanks to Michael for his time with this franchise,” said Pollin. “While the roster of talent he has assembled here in Washington may not have succeeded to his and my expectations, I do believe Michael’s desire to win and be successful is unquestioned. In the end, Ted (Leonsis) and I felt that this franchise should move in a different direction. I wish him only the very best in his future endeavors.”
|
I am a little surprise that Ted Leonsis was mentioned in the release as it always seemed that he was such a MJ backer. It will be interesting to see the reports from the meetings.

I understand it was acknowledged. The point is that it was acknowledged to be with expected problem people. Abe is loyal to his people and it shows here. I am laughing that it was an issue.
The official release amuses me.
Leonsis has an email he publicly gives out, and he generally responds to email. I am sure he is going to be sending out a lot of no comments.

Let me state that I did not think MJ was a savior, but I think he deserved to finish his 5 years with the club. COuld he have done better? Absolutely. Would he have done better the second go round? We will never know.
The problem is that Abe Pollin makes poor decisions. Keeping Wes around to run the team for as long as he did was a poor decision. The problem now is that Abe Pollin needs to being in a new GM. He is going to go back to his 3 man scouting department and try to do everything as cheap as he can. This is what irks me.
Can all be forgiven if he makes a slam dunk in choosing the next GM? Yes, but is that likely to happen? No. That is the issue here.

It's a sad, but true fact of professional sports that a few owners have less interest in winning than they do in a healthy bottom line. It's a business, a circus to such owners.
Whats Pollins interest?

He wants to win and he is not cheap. That is what is so sad. He put up his own money to build the MCI Center, so he is definitely not cheap. His problem is that he runs the Wizards like a mom and pop store. He doesn't understand what is needed, and he is incapable of getting or keeping the people with the vision to understand what needs to be done. He is intensely loyal to people like Susan O'Malley and Wes Unseld, to the point of where it became ludicrous that Wes was still the GM after the dismal seasons and front office blunders. If Wes had not declared he is taking a leave of absence make no mistake he would be the next GM, and he still might be, if Abe gets his way. The reason the Wizards have been dismal for so long can be traced to the one constant over that period of time and how he runs things. Abe Pollin. A truly great man that is incapable of competently running a profession sports organization.

To put it in Chicago terms, Pollin = McCaskey.
* Wants to win.
* Will spend money.
* Will most certainly not win.
