Jeffries Pleads For Wizards Not To Match
Quote:
Washington Post - The Washington Wizards are expected to receive a copy of the offer sheet that restricted free agent Jared Jeffries signed with the Knicks on Friday, and will have until next Monday to match if they want to retain the forward's services. Jeffries representatives, however, are pleading that the Wizards let their client go.
"We signed the offer sheet with the intention of playing with the New York Knicks ," Andy Miller said. "We hope that the Wizards respect Jared's wishes and allow him to move on with his career."
According to sources, the New York offer contains a couple of provisions that could make it more difficult for the Wizards to match, including an up-front payout of $6.5 million and a hefty trade kicker if Jeffries is traded.
Wizards owner Abe Pollin, President of Basketball Operations Ernie Grunfeld and Coach Eddie Jordan have all indicated a desire to retain Jeffries.
According to the Washington Post, the Wizards have room under the league's luxury tax threshold ($65.4 million) to match the Knicks' offer.

Okay, bye bye Jeffries. I don't feel Ernie should get this much stress just because of JJ. Yea he will help the team in terms of depth, defensively, and with some ball handling, but he's first of all not worth the amount the Knicks are giving him, and he doesn't want to be here.

Jared Jeffries: Wizards Will Reportedly Match Offer Sheet
RotoWire.com Staff - RotoWire.com
Tuesday, August 1, 2006
Update: Two sources close to Wizards general manager Ernie Grunfeld say Washington will match New York's offer sheet to Jeffries, the New York Post reports. The offer will pay Jeffries the mid-level exception for five years, coming to a total of $30 million. At that price, the Wizards can match and still not go over the luxury-tax threshold. Grunfeld did not comment other than to say they have received the offer sheet and have seven days to match it.

I sure hope so. I've wanted Deshawn to become a star since his Utah days. I kept sayiong he would leave Utah and become a star somewhere else. I would love it in 2 or 3 years Arenas and Stevenson were the Wiz starting backcourt and add jamison and those guys could maybe make up a new big 3.

Re: Jeffries Pleads For Wizards Not To Match
According to the New York Post, Grunfeld is expected to match the contract ( http://www.nypost.com/sports/knicks/...arc_berman.htm)
I think you have to take this statement as a grain of salt. His agent made the statement, Andy Miller, who represents Kevin Garnett, the one that Al Harrington has decided to fire, and the Brendan Haywood's contract. In a radio interview, Jarred Jeffries had indicated he really liked playing in Washington. I do not see why Jeffries would be upset with his role in the team. I think this may be the case of Andy MIller trying to increase his own profile by just making some news.

Re: Jeffries Pleads For Wizards Not To Match
I do think that if Wizards match the offer it will be a bad move... it's better to use this money to sign a SG, like Deshawn Stevenson (for less than Jeffries will get)

Re: Jeffries Pleads For Wizards Not To Match
wizards should match... it's not an outrageous contract comapred to other players. And come playoff time, they need more depth than what they have.

Re: Jeffries Pleads For Wizards Not To Match
I like Jeffries and I have supported him, but I say let him go. He made some remarks last year that he thinks he is being held back here and he wants a chance to shine. Well let him go to NY. We have good chemistry and we don't need to someone who doesn't want to be here. It's not like he isn't replaceable.

If a player doesn't want to be here, I don't keep him.

The Wizards do not have the cap room to sign Stevenson since they gave most of the MLE to Songaila. The Wizards can match any offer to Jeffries.
