Player Evaluation: Gilbert Arenas

I'd like to compile bbb.net player guides with evalutions on their strengths, weaknesses and fantasy value. Please take some time to at least answer the following for Gilbert Arenas as well as provide any additional information.

Strengths
1) What are the player's best basketball attributes?
2) What type of offense best suits the player?

Weaknesses
1) Which areas of the player's game have the biggest holes?
2) What type of defensive schemes gives this player trouble?

Fantasy
1) Does the player fill multiple statistical categories?
2) How would you classify this player's fantasy value? (i.e. early first, mid second, late rounder, etc)

I'll give this a go, since it seems you're looking to get more than one opinion here.

Strengths
1) Explosive scoring ability, strong enough to get to the rack and finish, but also able to pull up for jumpers all the way out to the three point line. Unlimited range on his jumper. Efficient scorer--threes and ability to get to the foul line make for a high TS%. Good at reading passing lanes and coming up with steals.
2) An offense that puts the ball in his hands most of the time (to take advantage of his scoring abilities) but also allows him to play off the ball, to minimize his weaknesses. I don't think it necessarily has to be a fast-breaking offense, but he would do well in that kind of system.

Weaknesses
1) Shot selection and decision making are often complaints. Very turnover-prone (though he is improving in that area). Has not shown himself to be an elite playmaker, is a scorer first and foremost. Individual defense is a concern.
2) Difficult to say, but any scheme that forces him to make constant quick passing decisions could cause him problems--i.e. trapping strongly, double-teaming, and quickly rotating.

Fantasy
1) Yes: points, threes, assists, steals
2) I don't play fantasy so I can't really say.

Strengths
1) What are the player's best basketball attributes?
Shooting range, shooting ability, slashing ability. That's keeping it simple, but those are three of the biggest aspects of basketball and don't require additional info.

2) What type of offense best suits the player?
The offense that the Wizards ran when they had Larry Hughes was absolutely perfect for Arenas (still works to a certain extent with Antonio Daniels, though not nearly as well). He gets to share ball-handling duties so he doesn't have to concentrate as much on making plays for his team, and can instead spend half the time using his considerable scoring ability (Arenas is by far the most effective and potent scorer on the Wizards) to put up some points.

So basically, make sure Arenas controls the ball for a good amount of his minutes, but also make sure he's playing off-the-ball considerably where he can come around and shoot off screens, or work his way close to the basket for an easy pass and layup. The Wizards need more strength down low, and then Arenas will be arguably the most unguardable player in the league, except for maybe Dirk. That's because, in my opinion, no player in the league has a more potent shooting range/slashing ability combination than Gilbert (except a healthy Tracy McGrady, and on some nights Kobe Bryant). With a solid big man down-low who doesn't have "Haywood" anywhere in his name, he'd be even that much deadlier, and he's already nearly scoring 30 ppg.

Weaknesses
1) Which areas of the player's game have the biggest holes?
His defense, mostly. His decision-making could still use some work, but he's improved by leaps and bounds in that category these last couple of seasons. His shot selection isn't nearly as bad as some make it seem, and even if he did put up a considerable amount of bad shots (which I assure you he doesn't), he's still extremely efficient particularly with how many threes he takes. His defense still needs quite a bit of work. He can play the passing lanes, but when it comes to guarding his guy man-to-man, Arenas struggles.

Oh, and Arenas does get his teammates involved. That isn't one of his issues, though that's also something many people think since Arenas scores so much. Butler, Jamison and Hughes didn't exactly have a lot of trouble scoring when playing with Arenas, with Hughes and Butler even posting career highs in that category.

Quote:
2) What type of defensive schemes gives this player trouble?
No single defensive schemes really give Arenas that much trouble since he's such a versatile scorer. If it's a zone, he'll just shoot all day long. If it's man-to-man, he'll usually slash in and draw fouls. It isn't defensive schemes that give Arenas trouble, but rather strong defensive players at the 1 or 2 positions, and even those don't give him too much trouble. Double-teaming and trapping him is the best bet, but that's risky as when that happens Arenas will often throw it out to a wide-open Jamison for a three. Often-times a team will let Arenas go off, knowing that he'll get his points anyway, and try to supress the rest of the team.

Arenas may be inconsistent from game-to-game occasionally, but I haven't seen any one defensive scheme that he hasn't been able to handle with some degree of success.

Fantasy
1) Does the player fill multiple statistical categories?
Arenas is probably one of the top 3 or so guards in terms of fantasy. Haven't played fantasy in a while, but Arenas gets you free throws, lots of threes, lots of points, a good amount of steals, and a good amount of assists. The points and three-pointers, in particular, are where Arenas shines fantasy-wise.

2) How would you classify this player's fantasy value? (i.e. early first, mid second, late rounder, etc)
Depends on how many guys are in your league and what type of league it is, but on average, probably mid-first-round, second-round at the latest. Fantasy-wise, Arenas isn't that much worse a choice than a Kobe or (healthy) McGrady, and might even be better than Wade because of his massive amount of threes to Wade's relative none, though Wade gets more boards and shoots a much higher FG% (which Yahoo Sports unfortunately takes into account). All depends on what you need and what league you're in.

Re: Player Evaluation: Gilbert Arenas

The most Golden State should have given him was the mid-level excepion. He could have gone to the Clippers though.

Gilbert Arenas is easily a top 10 fantasy player no matter what kind of system you are playing.

His value is similar to Dwayne Wade's but is still below Lebron and KG.

Arenas can carry your team's FT% if you're playing roti, he also helps you in points, assists, threes, assists and steals. His turnovers are high (averaged 3.7 last year) and he's an above average rebounder for a point guard.

If you're in a keeper league, Arenas should be one of the top, if not the top point guard out there. Chris Paul might be better if he improves like he should the upcoming season.

Re: Player Evaluation: Gilbert Arenas

I really don't think Arenas has a bad shot selection, especially since it works. Personally, I think Jamison has worse shot selection. The worst part of his game is definetely his defense. Fantasy wise, he is great since he gets around 2 steals per game. Fantasy wise he is a mid to late first rounder.
