Butler Breaks Hand, likely out for year
Butler Breaks Hand
Quote:
MILWAUKEE - The Washington Wizards might be without All-Star forward Caron Butler for the playoffs. Butler scored 19 points before he broke his right hand Sunday midway through the third quarter during the Wizards' game against the Milwaukee Bucks.
"Second round, third round, a possibility," Butler said after the game. "But right now, I probably won't have a jersey on until next year."
Butler said that the accident happened when he went up to challenge a shot by Ruben Patterson and his right hand hit the backboard. He was playing in his third game back since missing six with a left knee contusion.
"My hand caught under the rim, and it popped out of place," Butler said.

Ouch... I have a hard time seeing us get very far without him.

That sucks for Caron and the Wizards, now they have to rely on Jarvis Hayes starting at SF and thats not good. Hopefully Blatche can come back and give them some minutes, at least hes a decent defender and a good rebounder.

Unfortunately not.
I think what the Wiz need to do is go big and shift Jamison to the 3 as much as possible with Songaila filling in at the 4.
Hayes will have to play more, but he's a lost cause to me at this point, and I think even though Songaila isn't great (at all), he's at least going to give a fairly competent effort.

Re: Butler Breaks Hand, likely out for year
I think we are screwed. Unless he makes a miraculous early comeback we aren't going anywhere. We could possibly survive the first round, but no way we get past the 2nd without him and he'd probably be rusty if he did come back then anyways. The 2nd half has been a disaster.

I think that's a pretty good idea. That's a big lineup, but Jamison and Songaila can really stretch out the defense. Jarvis has also been playing well lately, so he'd be another possibility.

I still have faith in Gilbert and Co.
Getting far in the playoffs is going to be tough without him, but we still have a lot of talent. If Blatche gets healthy soon and gets into rhythm then I don't see us getting ousted so early.

I forgot about that, but according to the MRI, he's just bruised and should be back in a couple of games... we'll definitely need the depth.
How far do we get without Butler?
Well, here's how we've done so far:
Situation W L % No Jamison 4 5 44.4% No Butler 2 4 33.3% Neither 0 3 0.0% Both Play 33 21 61.1% Situation W L % No Jamison 4 5 44.4% No Butler 2 4 33.3% Neither 0 3 0.0% Both Play 33 21 61.1% No Jamison 4-5 (.444)
No Butler 2-4 (.333)
Neither 0-3 (.000)
Both 33-21 (.611)
Not very encouraging, but we've got the "advantage" of having our backs against the wall.

Coming from a Non Wizards fan.
getting out of the first round is unlikely without butler.
Heat, Bulls, and Raptors will all beat them silly in the first round..
sorry to burst your bubble.

The Wizards still have a chance to move out of the 1st round; it's just going to be that much harder. They still have Arenas, one of the best players in the league, and Jamison who can score in the post and the perimeter. Deshawn Stevenson is going to have to fill in for some of the scoring void and the Wizards are going to have to see a steady contribution from Hayes. The Wizards simply have less room for error, and they have to pick it up on the defensive end.

Re: Butler Breaks Hand, likely out for year
Also we were like winless without Butler last year. Songaila, however, is playing well and that gives me some hope. Clearly Gilbert has to be on fire to get us out of the first round with big contributions from Jamison as well, but even last year Gil had a great series and we lost. It's going to be tough. Miami doesn't exactly look like a powerhouse right now and I like our chances against them despite the history.

you make a great point...with butler being out earlier this year with his knee injury, stevenson produced pretty well...perhaps his performance didn't translate into wins, but maybe things will be different in the postseason...
