Arenas to Opt-Out after 2007-08 Season

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2899563

Quote:
"To me, it's just a smarter business decision to play next season, opt out and then be able to sign a long-term deal that is going to keep me in one place," Arenas said, according to The Washington Post.

Arenas said that he will act as his own agent, and at least at this point, he's not seeking to leave the Wizards.

"I'm not looking at anything else. It's just business. If something happens where they don't want me or they're going in a different direction, I can look elsewhere. But my intentions are not to leave," Arenas said, according to The Post.

However, he told The Washington Times that he will gauge other teams' interest.

"I'm going to opt out and consider some other teams next year," Arenas told The Times. "I want to test the market and test my value."
Not really surprising. I believe him that he wants to stay, but he wants to win as well so it is time for Ernie Grunfeld to step up.

He wants the max and he deserves it. I don't think he leaves Washington, but the Wizards do need to figure out how to build a supporting cast around him, namely a scoring big man.

Re: Arenas to Opt-Out after 2007-08 Season

I'm not shocked to hear this. He's been saying for a couple years now that he wants to compete for a championship, not just to make the playoffs. He wants to see the Wizards' front office make whatever changes are needed to take him there.

I'm sure he's watching Lebron right now taking his mediocre Cavaliers team to the championship and thinking why he isn't doing the same thing with probably the same or better supporting cast.

But please Gilbert, stay in Washington. You've grown into an icon here, so stay here.

Zach Randolph sound good? Arenas/Butler/Zach is pretty damn good in the East.

Re: Arenas to Opt-Out after 2007-08 Season

This is smart by Arenas and his agent for the simple fact that the '08 offseason is not an amazing year for FA agents (it's better than this year, but not amazing). Whereas '09 will have a ton of free agents on the open market. If the Wiz backslide (and for their sake they better not), Gilbert will be playing for another team.

Arenas does not have an agent and does not plan on hiring anyone in the near future. He parted ways with agent Dan Fegan last summer.

Gilbert could very quickly and easily screw himself, I think.

No thanks to Randolph. He comes with way too much baggage. The Wizards are already crazy enough with Arenas. Randolph would probably excel on the court but he would probably get traded for absolutely nothing once he committed a crime. Remember, Abe Pollin is the image conscience owner who changed the franchises' name from Bullets to Wizards because he thought Bullets was too violent. Pollin was also the reason that Chris Webber, who was caught doing marijuana, was traded for Mitch Richmond in one of the most lopsided trades ever.

i dont... its pretty much a no brainer to opt out of this deal.

1) would you want a 2 year contract for 20mil or 6 yr contract for 80-90
2) when you are a max contract player what is the point of an agent other taking a large percentage of a contract that is already written in stone by the CBA.
3) whats the worst that could happen... get stuck on a team with a #2 option that should be a third option. A third option that, despite being a great team leader, has already lost a step and is defensive liability.
