His defense has improved gradually over the course of the season to the point where EJ usually sticks him on the opponent's best man when he goes in, sad as that may actually be. He does a good job using his height to his advantage to make shots difficult for the opponent, and might be our best player at keeping balls alive that would otherwise be the opponent's.
That said, he's still been an overall disappointment this season. His offense is downright pathetic, easily the worst on the team. Unless his plan is to completely dedicate himself to the defensive end and attempt no more than a couple of shots a game, he's got major improvement required on that end of the floor before he'll become someone I'm generally happy to see on the floor. When I mentioned his defense before, I don't want it to sound like I think he's anything great on that side of the court either. He is adequate there, but nothing special. He just looks better on defense than he is because is offense is so sad.
I still have some hope for him to become something in the NBA -- however, that something is a solid role player, not a key factor for our team.

Heh Hayes may be better than JJ at this point, be hasn't exactly been blowing anyone away outside of his opening two weeks of the season. I do have much more hope for his future with us though, so that's something.
