Here is my opinion on the MJ factor on why people generally have a better 'attitude' and 'play harder' with him on the team.
His teammates recognize that MJ is the:
1 - Best player on the team
2 - Hardest worker on the team
3 - Most competitive on the team
4 - Has the most 'acid tongue' on the team, and his teammates don't want it to be used on them. MJ's mouth sent Kwame into the lockerroom crying, chased several Bulls players (Hopson) off the team, and caused Bill Cartwright to threaten MJ with a career ending injury (MJ told players not to pass to Cartwright in the 4th quarter, or MJ wouldn't pass to them.) My point is that MJ is the ultimate alpha male, and will not mind getting in Oakley's face and letting him know he needs to step it up. And I think Oakley will respond.
IF Oakley is motivated, and I believe he will be because he'll be on a competitive team, he can contribute good rebounding, defense, and be an enforcer which is sometimes necessary when you have a K-Martin trying to clothesline your superstar(s).
Oakley's play noticeably improved after Floyd left. That leads me to believe he was somewhat 'mailing his performance in.' And Toronto had no personalities like MJ to keep Oakley in check. Oakley even had to play peacemaker between Carter and McGrady.
