When you think of nighttime entertainment options in Central Oregon, professional basketball doesn't often come to mind. But local partners in the Central Oregon Hotshots, a second-year franchise in the 24-team newly formed International Basketball League, believe that the market exists for additional minor league sports and are exploring ways to construct a multipurpose athletic center in Bend.
The facility would become home to the Hotshots and potentially another minor league hockey or arena football team and serve as practice facilities to the growing number of recreation and traveling teams in the area. In addition, the private facility would give its members a place to work out and a year-round venue for the growing number of music concerts in the area.
According to JJ Anderson, coach of the Hotshots and partners with Augustine Flores, Chet Hildebrandt and Michelle Anderson, who is not related to JJ Anderson, minor league sports would deliver entertainment options in the evening for Central Oregon's visitors, hoops fans and local families.
The Hotshots, equitable to a Triple A minor league franchise in baseball, are part of the two-year-old, 24-team IBL. The league's Web site claims a long-term chance for success due to its faster style of play and sustainable operations due to limited overhead costs.
