The Mercury made the first trade of the Paul Westhead era Friday, dealing Anna DeForge to the Indiana Fever for Kelly Miller in an exchange of guards.
DeForge, who started 94 games in the past three seasons for the Mercury, was a restricted free agent who had an offer from the Fever. Phoenix's options were to match the offer and retain DeForge or to make a deal to get something for her.
Miller is a 5-foot-10, sixth-year pro out of Georgia. She started every game for the Fever in the past two seasons, averaging 10.2 points. She and her twin sister, Coco, a restricted free agent with the Washington Mystics, own a home in the Valley.
"I'm excited about the opportunity of coaching Kelly Miller," said first-year Mercury coach Westhead. "She is an athletic guard with good speed that can play either guard spot in a fast-break offense. She has really good three-point range and can score off the dribble as well. Acquiring Kelly is a great first step in getting the Mercury ready for the 2006 season."
Miller, 27, is expected to start at point guard for the Mercury and play next to Diana Taurasi and Penny Taylor on the perimeter.
