SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio Silver Stars head coach and general manager Dan Hughes announced today that Edna Campbell has decided to retire from the WNBA.



"Edna is going to be sorely missed," Hughes said. "Her team leadership is invaluable and it's going to be hard not to have her in the locker room before and after games. Her guidance off the court is also going to be something that will be hard to replace."



Campbell, a seven-year WNBA veteran, made the move to San Antonio as a free agent in 2005. In her only season with the Silver Stars she appeared in 28 games, averaging 1.7 points in 8.9 minutes while coming off the bench. During her career she played for four teams, including San Antonio (2005), Sacramento (2001-2004), Seattle (2000) and Phoenix (1999). In 2002, Campbell became the first active player to be diagnosed with breast cancer. After missing the first 31 games of the 2002 season battling the disease, she made a remarkable return to the court in the final game of the season. During the 2003 season Campbell started in all 34 games for Sacramento and received the Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award. For her career, Campbell played in 161 games, averaging 7.1 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 21.3 minutes per game. She leaves the game ranked 12th on the WNBA's all-time list for three-point shooting percentage connecting on 38.8 percent (161-416) of her shots from beyond the arc.



"As solid a three-point shooter as Edna was, people will remember her career for more than what she did on the court," Donna Orender, WNBA President, said. "They'll remember the time and effort she dedicated to the community, the good she has done through her Young Parents Foundation. Edna demonstrated tremendous courage and determination during her battle with breast cancer and, in the process, was a role model on so many levels. The WNBA, our teams and our players are about inspiring people. Edna's role as an inspiring figure has had a significant impact on people throughout the country."



Campbell's professional basketball career reaches much further than the WNBA. Her remarkable career includes playing for U.S.A. Basketball, a three-year stint in the American Basketball League (ABL) and a number of years playing professionally in Europe. Campbell helped Team USA win the gold medal at the World Championships in 1998 and was an alternate for the 1996 Olympic Team.



From 1996-99 Campbell played in the ABL with the Colorado Xplosion. In 1997 she was named to the ABL All-Star Team. Before joining the ABL Campbell played professionally in Brazil for three years from 1992-95. She has also played professionally in Poland, Italy and France.



"I have had the time of my life playing the game of basketball," Campbell said. "The experiences that I have had and the relationships that I have developed through basketball are far more noteworthy than I can put into words. My gratitude is abounding. I look forward to the next chapter of my life with great enthusiasm. The best is yet to come!!!!"



The Silver Stars will start the WNBA's 10th Anniversary season on the road when they rekindle their intrastate rivalry with the Houston Comets on May 21. Fans will be able to listen to every Silver Stars game on The Ticket 760 AM and selected games will be televised on KABB WB-35.
