National Council for Research on Women Honors the WNBA's 10th Anniversary
The Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA), an international criminal court judge, two women from the corporate sphere, and a national policy organization will be honored tonight for their outstanding achievements at the National Council for Research on Women's Women Who Make a Difference Awards Dinner. The event showcases the value of research and the power of knowledge, and celebrates unique accomplishments of women who are paving the way for a more just and equitable world for women and girls. CBS anchor Roz Abrams will host the evening. The Awards Dinner takes place on the eve of International Women's Day (March 8) and during the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women meetings-a propitious time to honor the accomplishments of trailblazing women who forge new paths on unchartered terrain. The 2006 Council Honorees are the Women's National Basketball Association; Joanna Barsh, Director, McKinsey & Company; Susan Kropf, President and Chief Operating Officer, Avon Products, Inc.; Judge Navanethem Pillay, International Criminal Court and the first black woman judge in South Africa, who went on to become a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda; and the Institute for Women's Policy Research. "This year's Honorees inspire us with their courage," says the Council's President, Linda Basch. "Whether it is in the International Criminal Court, on the basketball court, in Congress or in Corporate America, these courageous honorees do the unimaginable, and by doing so chart new territory and visions for women and girls." During the event, the Council will release its new report, Gains and Gaps: A Look at the World's Women, which offers a current snapshot of the status of women and girls. "Women have made progress on all fronts," says Basch. "But at the same time that we celebrate the many gains, we have to acknowledge there are still too many gaps." The report sheds light on the conditions and experiences of women around the globe, looking at six key components of women's security: education and literacy, health, political and civic participation, the economy, violence, and the special threats to particular groups of women whose security is particularly tenuous. The report locates US women within a global context, compares their experiences in these areas with those of women in other regions of the world, and points to the power of women's activism and research -both locally and globally-to create positive change. Like the U.N.'s recently released report The World's Women 2005: Progress in Statistics, the Council's Gains and Gaps points to the dearth of statistics and research on women upon which programs and policies can be based. Co-chairing this year's Awards Dinner are Michelle Clayman, Managing Partner & Chief Investment Officer, New Amsterdam Partners LLC; Jeffrey R. Lewis, President, Heinz Family Philanthropies; and Melinda Wolfe, Managing Director, Goldman, Sachs & Co. The Council gives special thanks to The Coca-Cola Company, Avon Products, Inc.; Citigroup; and Goldman, Sachs & Co. for sponsoring the 2006 Women Who Make a Difference Awards Dinner. Advancing Women's Human Rights: A Public Forum Preceding the Award Dinner at 3 p.m., the Council will hold a forum on advancing women's human rights through international law, the media, and women's leadership. The forum will be moderated by Mirta Ojito, author and visiting Professor of Journalism at Columbia University. Featured panelists are Kathy Rodgers, President of Legal Momentum; Carroll Bogert, Associate Director responsible for external relations at Human Rights Watch; and Council Honoree Navanethem Pillay-the first black woman judge in South Africa, who went on to become a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. The program will be held at 74 Trinity Place (in lower Manhattan, off of Wall Street behind Trinity Church, second floor). There is no charge for this event and it is open to the public and the press. Proceeds from the Awards Dinner support the Council's programs. Tickets and information may be obtained from CMI Event Planning at (212)786-6176 or email ncrw@cmevents.net.
