Training camp allows teams to set the foundation for the upcoming season's philosophies, and as the Silver Stars opened camp Sunday afternoon, the primary approach that coach Dan Hughes wants to instill is apparent.
Of the 22 drills the team went through in a two-hour workout, 15 revolved around defense. The Silver Stars spent all but 30 minutes of practice working on defensive alignment.
"We wanted it to be very clear about what we desire and what's important to us," Hughes said. "The players get a picture of how we want to operate from the beginning."
Hughes has a reputation for being a coach who likes to keep scores low, but Sunday's tone of defense, defense and more defense had more to do with team improvements than satisfying Hughes' defensive appetite.
Last season, the Silver Stars allowed 71 points per game, and opponents hit 44 percent of their shots. Often times, the Silver Stars' poor defensive spacing led to problems in rebounding. The team averaged only 28 rebounds a game, mostly because players were not in position to block out or get to the basketball.
