Minnesota Lynx starting forward Tamika Williams will have surgery Tuesday to repair a torn medial meniscus in her left knee. Williams, 26, was injured during the Lynx's first practice of training camp Sunday night.
"My heart is broken for her because she came in with such high expectations,'' Lynx coach Suzie McConnell Serio said of the team's captain who was beginning her fifth season with Minnesota.
"It is obviously disappointing, but on one hand it is better it happening now than just before the season opener.''
McConnell Serio and Roger Griffith, Minnesota chief operating officer, refused to speculate on a timetable on Williams' return until after Tuesday's surgery. Williams arrived on crutches long after Monday's Media Day activities were finished.
"Her biggest challenge will be mentally,'' McConnell Serio said. "She has a lot of (rehabilitation) work ahead of her.''
