Mistie Williams' journey has been a circuitous one — from the hoop dreams of a wistful youngster in Wisconsin to a successful basketball run at Duke and onto the Toyota Center practice court of the Comets.
There have been a few bumps along the way such as the Blue Devils' overtime loss to Maryland in the NCAA championship game earlier this month.
But for Williams, heartaches have been tempered by a real-life situation not even a prime-time reality show could equal.
"It's always been my dream to play here in Houston," Williams said Monday. "I had my little Sheryl Swoopes jersey when I was 10 years old (in Janesville Wis.), I had my WNBA hat, and I was coming here.
"So when my dad found out I was going to Houston (after Williams was obtained in trade on draft day), he said, 'Well, you didn't get one thing, but you got your next.'
"And my husband's family is from here. So I've got my family and just everything has worked out. I'm taking advantage of this opportunity, and I'm enjoying it because it's been 12 years that I've had this dream. And now, it's finally here."
