The short-handed Storm rallied from a six-point deficit in the final 1:46 Friday night, only to fall 68-67 to the Chicago Sky at the UIC Pavilion when Elaine Powell hit two free throws with 1.7 seconds remaining.
Betty Lennox's runner at the buzzer went off the side as the Sky, the first-year Chicago WNBA team, stayed unbeaten at 2-0 in the exhibition season before 3,622.
The Storm (1-1) only suited 10 players for the game and will only suit 10 for tonight's exhibition game at Minnesota. Janell Burse did not travel with the team after aggravating her shoulder injury.
"We didn't have our post player," Storm coach Anne Donovan said. "Even though we had four other post bodies and Wendy Palmer playing 30 minutes, we had limited experience and it definitely hurt us."
Lauren Jackson watched the game in street clothes as she continues to recover from shin splints. Jackson is expected to play tonight at Minnesota when Tanisha Wright will not be with the team. Wright planned to fly to her graduation ceremony at Penn State in State College, Pa., this morning.
"It's a tough one to swallow," Wright said of the loss. "As poorly as we played, we had a chance to win it at the end of the game."
Brooke Wyckoff, who led the Sky with 12 points, hit her fourth three-pointer with 1:46 remaining for the biggest lead of the game, 66-60.
"Obviously, it wasn't a game we played our best," Bird said. "We were really lacking in a lot of areas, one of them being energy. For us to even be in the game, I think is our ability in crunch time to make some plays. Wendy Palmer did a good job of keeping us in the game tonight."
