For eight of the 14 teams in the WNBA, the playoffs start this week. For the Sky, which just finished its inaugural season, the planning is starting for Year 2.
''We'll have meetings over the next couple of weeks,'' said Michael Alter, the principal owner of the Sky. ''The players are meeting with the coaches now.
''Everyone except for Amanda [Lassiter, a free agent] is under contract. This has been a learning curve for us. The challenge we had was that we hadn't had a practice or seen a player when we started.''
The free-agency period begins in January, and trades are possible, but for now, the Sky will be looking toward next April's draft.
The Sky had the league's worst record, so it will have the most chances to land the top pick in the 2007 draft. And it will be guaranteed one of the top three picks.
Coach and general manager Dave Cowens has identified the biggest needs as a point guard and a center.
