Latta's 3-pointer breaks tie for No. 2 UNC
/ Associated Press
Posted: 34 minutes ago
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Ivory Latta's 3-pointer with 1:02 remaining gave North Carolina the lead for good, and the second-ranked Tar Heels remained undefeated by beating No. 6 Connecticut 82-76 on Monday night.
LaToya Pringle scored 18 points and Erlana Larkins added 15 points and 16 rebounds for the Tar Heels (20-0), who blew a 15-point lead and overcame 26 turnovers to remain one of two teams with perfect records.
Kalana Greene had tied it at 76 with 2:12 to play, and Latta threw the ball away on North Carolina's next possession. But she soon made up for it by taking a pass at the top of the key and hitting a clutch 3 to put North Carolina ahead to stay. She added two free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.
Greene had 23 points to lead the Huskies (14-2), who lost their third straight in the series.
Latta finished with 14 points while Camille Little added 13 for the Tar Heels, who kept pace with their archrival - No. 1 Duke - as the lone remaining unbeatens.
UConn had used a furious rally to erase a 15-point deficit. The Huskies outscored North Carolina 17-4 over a 6-minute span, pulling to 64-62 on Tina Charles' layup with 7 minutes left. They took their first lead 2 minutes later when Renee Montgomery's short jumper made it 70-68 with 4:52 to play.
North Carolina took its big second-half lead when back-to-back 3-pointers by Rashanda McCants and Latta and a short jumper by Camille Little made it 60-45 with 13 minutes to play.
In December 2005, the Tar Heels went to Hartford, Conn., and handed Geno Auriemma the worst home loss of his career, a 77-54 rout that left the veteran coach speechless.
His resilient Huskies wouldn't let North Carolina do it again. UConn survived a miserable first-half stretch in which it made 3 of 19 shots and fell behind by 11.
It was the second straight rough game for Montgomery against a high-profile foe. Eleven days after Tennessee held her to four points, Montgomery finished with six on 3-of-15 shooting against the Tar Heels.

Re: NCAAW scores & stuff
Duke 64 North Carolina 53
Quote:
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Duke was here before, carrying the No. 1 ranking onto its biggest rival's home court - only to have North Carolina snatch it away.
Not this time. By twice turning back the Tar Heels' late comeback attempts, these determined Blue Devils wouldn't let it happen again.
Abby Waner scored six of her 16 points during the decisive second-half spurt, and top-ranked Duke held off No. 2 North Carolina 64-53 on Thursday night.
"It's a new year. It's a whole new team," Waner said. "I didn't enjoy last year's game here so much. Obviously, you think about what they brought last year, and what you'd change, but it was a whole new year."
Wanisha Smith had all 17 of her points in the first half, Lindsey Harding added 16 points and Alison Bales had 14 rebounds for the Blue Devils (25-0, 10-0 Atlantic Coast Conference).
Duke overcame second-half foul trouble and held off the Tar Heels at every critical juncture, improving to 8-0 against ranked teams and snapping a five-game losing streak to North Carolina - including a surprisingly lopsided loss here last year in the first 1-2 matchup in the history of the rivalry.
"It makes us feel a little bit better about the losses we had in the past, but not much," Duke coach Gail Goestenkors said.
Camille Little scored a season-high 21 points and Erlana Larkins had 14 rebounds for the Tar Heels (24-1, 8-1), but star point guard Ivory Latta finished with just nine points on 3-of-20 shooting and missed all 11 of her 3-point attempts.
"It's pretty simple - we've just got to shoot the ball better," North Carolina coach Sylvia Hatchell said. "I don't know we've ever had a game ... where the rest of the team shot as poorly as we did."
North Carolina twice rallied to tie in the second half, the last coming when Alex Miller's jumper with 7:50 left made it 47-47.
Duke countered with a clinching 14-3 spurt led by Waner and Bales. Bales started the run with a wide-open layup and later added an 18-footer, and Waner then scored three straight baskets.
Her last field goal deflated the sellout crowd at Carmichael Auditorium. Waner drove toward the corner, then pulled up and knocked down a jumper, making it 57-50 with 2:40 to play.
"I thought that was the dagger," Goestenkors said.
Duke's lead grew to 61-50 on a late free throw by Bales, who overcame a rough offensive game - finishing with just seven points - by blocking seven shots and affecting several others.
"Offensively, she didn't score much, but defensively, she was a monster," Goestenkors said. "She changed so many shots."
Duke avenged its previous visit to Chapel Hill - a 77-65 loss to the Tar Heels - and earned its first victory against North Carolina in the post-Alana Beard era. The Blue Devils had won 12 straight in the series before their five-game slide.
"Everybody kept talking about 1 vs. 2," Harding said. "I kept thinking, 'We've got to get Carolina."'
It was the latest into a regular season that two unbeatens met in a 1-2 matchup, and the first time it matched teams with perfect records from the same conference.
"Twenty-one years (of coaching at North Carolina) and this is what we dreamed of," Hatchell said. "I'm sorry that we didn't protect our home court."
The Blue Devils led for much of the first half, taking the lead on Harding's jumper in the lane midway through the half, which started a 10-2 spurt. Duke's lead grew to 10 in the half on Gay's jumper from the elbow that made it 29-19.
North Carolina used strong free-throw shooting to keep it close in the opening 20 minutes. The Tar Heels made up for a stretch in which they had one field goal in 9 1/2 minutes by making 11 of 15 foul shots in the half.
The Tar Heels' shooting woes continued in the second half, and they finished 2-of-19 from 3-point range.

Drexel beats Northeastern in record 5 OTs
Drexel beats Northeastern in record 5 OTs
Quote:
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Gabriela Marginean scored a school-record 47 points and Drexel beat Northeastern 98-90 in five overtimes Thursday night in the longest game in NCAA women's basketball history.
The 65-minute game eclipsed the previous record of four overtimes, which occurred 11 times, most recently between Northern Illinois and Bowling Green on Feb. 18, 2004. Northern Illinois won that game 102-97.
The NCAA men's record is seven overtimes, set in Black Hills' 80-79 victory over Yankton in a 1956 Division II game, and matched by Cincinnati in a 75-73 win over Bradley in a Division I game in 1981.
Marginean, a freshman, scored 20 of her points in four overtime periods and finished with 22 rebounds before fouling out for Drexel (8-19, 3-13 Colonial Athletic Association).
Shaleyse Smallwood scored a career-high 37 points for the Huskies (4-23, 3-13), and tied the game six times down the stretch.
Drexel held a 13-point lead at the half before Northeastern rallied in the second half and forged a 55-all tie at the end of regulation. Each team scored seven points in the first overtime, 10 in the second extra period, eight in the third and five in the fourth OT.
In the fifth overtime period, Delise Johnson made two free throws that put Drexel ahead to stay, and teammate Narissa Suber followed a timely field goal with a pair of 3-pointers as the Dragons used a 13-5 run to clinch the win.
Northeastern shot 28-for-74 from the field, including 5-for-23 from 3-point range. The Huskies were 29-for-35 from the line.
Drexel shot 35-for-73, including 6-for-23 from long distance. The Dragons were 22-for-29 from the line and held a 50-36 rebounding edge.
