SWAC Basketball Tournament Pairings Announced
March 4, 2007
The Southwestern Athletic Conference has announced its pairings for the 2007 SWAC Men and Women’s Basketball Tournament. The four-day event will be held March 7-10, 2007 at Birmingham’s BJCC Arena.
In the women’s bracket, both Jackson State and Prairie View A&M finished with identical 14-4 conference mark; however, Jackson State 2-0 season mark against Prairie View (16-13) was the tiebreaker allowing the Lady Tigers (20-9) the number one seed. With Prairie View claiming the number two seed, the remaining top seeds went to Alabama A&M (17-12, 13-5 SWAC) and Arkansas-Pine Bluff (15-13, 10-8 SWAC). Rounding out the five through eight seeds for the women were Alabama State (12-17, 9-9); Grambling State (11-18, 7-11); Southern (5-21, 5-13) and Mississippi Valley State (7-20, 4-14).

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Candice Thomas scored 26 points to lead Prairie View A&M to a 68-62 victory over Jackson State on Saturday in the championship game of the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament.
Prairie View (19-13), which had never had a winning record before this season, advanced to the NCAA tournament for the first time.
Jackson State (22-10) beat the Lady Panthers twice during the regular season, but was unable to overcome a poor shooting performance in third matchup.
The Lady Tigers were 20-of-65 (31 percent) from the field.
LaSheree Christian, the team's No. 2 scorer this season, was 2-for-18 and scored only seven points, five below her season average.
Jackson State trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half, but opened the second half on a 20-7 run to take a 47-42 lead.
The Lady Tigers faded after that, going 8 minutes without making a basket. Prairie View outscored Jackson State 14-2 during that span, and led by as many as 12 points in the final minutes.
Twila Stokes had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Prairie View, and Gaati Werema added 10 points and a game-high 17 boards.
Shelita Burns, the SWAC player of the year, led Jackson State with 14 points and eight rebounds. But she was only 6-of-15 from the field.
Carena Easley had 14 points, and Shante Stanford grabbed 11 boards.
The Lady Panthers led by as much as 27-12 in the first half thanks largely to Thomas, who surpassed her average of 10.7 points per game in the first 12 minutes.
Jackson State starters began the game by going 2-for-21 from the field before the team managed to close the gap to 35-27 at halftime.
