WWE news/notes from the Observer

Bits from this week's Observer:
Quote:
-Regarding the Kia Stevens (Kharma) firing, the reputation she had gotten that killed her is that in training, they felt she was lazy and was difficult for them to get her back in shape.

-Laurinaitis has been told that he will be returning to television soon as some sort of an Executive Vice President character.

We don’t know the details but obviously some sort of agreement has been reached regarding the ability to no longer have to blur the WWF scratch logo in archival footage. It was an agreement with the Wildlife Fund for Nature. Also known as the World Wildlife Fund, they owned rights to the WWF initials and in 1994, reached an agreement with the wrestling company that would allow the wrestling company to use and market the initials in the North American market, but not worldwide. The wrestling company ignored the document they agreed to, ended up in court, and losing many years ago, which led to the change of name to WWE. Questions to get a clarification of the new deal and ruling from the WWE side have gone unanswered.

JBL pitched for the idea of coming back as an announcer since Booker was moved from the announcing spot to the G.M. spot. He was very good in the role years ago. He mentioned it on twitter a few weeks back but not sure how serious that was.

HHH is pushing to get McGillicutty repackaged. He’s still high on both he and McIntyre as far as long-term potential.

-Also, it should be noted that HHH has never been that high on women wrestling. When it comes to the recent camps and recruits of top athletes, they are men and not women being recruited although they are still adding women to the developmental roster but since Laurinaitis has been out of power the days of looking at bikini catalogs and signing the models, or recruiting from modeling agencies, seem to be over. Some who have worked with him and talked the subject with him believe when he gets more power you’ll see more of an emphasis on tag teams and women will be even more on the back burner.
Thank god Triple H wants to bring back tag wrestling. He's going to have to invest a lot of time (probably years) into rebuilding the division because they've been buried for roughly five years now.

I really hope JBL is able to get back on commentary. He was awesome during his last run and did a great job getting over guys.

I'm not really a fan of Johnny Ace returning to TV but I guess he's a heat magnet. They already have AJ and Triple H on Raw as authority figures. They don't need another one.

I think I'll post tidbits every time a new Observer comes out. (Once a week)

Women will be even more on the back burner?? I seriously have no clue how that's even possible right now without firing them.

Good idea Headliner. I've been meaning to make a thread like this for a while but never got around to it.

Re: WWE news/notes from the Observer 8/23

Quote:
The current target date for Mark Henry’s return after shoulder surgery is late fall. He’s saying that if the shoulder doesn’t fully recover that he may retire but is expecting to return. Henry has talked for years about retiring and trying to get into other entertainment ventures but in the end has always stayed.

WWE Films announced this past week a joint venture with Warner Brothers to produce an animated Scooby Doo movie with a WrestleMania theme. The storyline is that Shaggy and Scooby win tickets to WrestleMania, which in whatever year this is set in, is being held in “WWE City.” The least it could have been held in was Parts Unknown with masked people running all the convenience stores. However, a ghostly bear threatens to ruin the show, and the Scooby Doo gang has to work with WWE wrestlers to solve the case. I wonder if at the end they pull the mask off the last ghost and it’s a Democratic senator from Connecticut. Among the WWE performers who will did voices as themselves in the movie are Vince McMahon, HHH, Cena, Kane, Miz, Clay, Marella, Sin Cara and A.J., which also gives you a clue who they are wanting to push and who they see as future stars, in particular Sin Cara who doesn’t know English vs. Mysterio who is bilingual. The voice over work was done over this past weekend. The movie is scheduled for a 2014 straight-to-video release.

Alex Shelley (Patrick Martin, 29) has been in serious talks. As of the weekend, he had not signed a contract and he is booked on the September New Japan tour. But it appears they are close and that a signing is imminent. The key to that is he would be the first TNA talent to sign since the lawsuit was filed by TNA against WWE for raiding talent. Shelley’s contract had expired on his own and he was not named in the lawsuit. From a technical standpoint, Shelley is believed to have finished with TNA on 5/21, and TNA filed the lawsuit on 5/24. By that time, it was known WWE had at least some interest in Shelley. WWE has told people about doing an all-cruiserweight TV show for the network, but the people talked about as far as hiring for that show were all on hold since the network isn’t going to be up and running for months. The only person named in the lawsuit was Flair.

While Del Rio had talked about leaving the company in a few years, he did an interview where he said he’d now like to stay for 10 or 15 more years, or as long as they’d have me.

After Punk did an interview telling TMZ that AW should have been fired and there should be no tolerance for rape jokes, Brian Jossie, the former AW responded by saying, “I see C.M. Punk has become a bit vocal in saying I should have been fired for an alleged rape joke. Well, then why wasn’t Big Show fired? He wasn’t fired because he draws more money than I do. With WWE it’s not about morals, it’s about money.” It’s also about timing and being a good soldier. And Show’s line was more likely scripted for him and approved and it was a different time. Punk told TMZ, “I don’t like to see anybody lose their job,” but when the subject was brought up, Punk said AW’s firing was justified because rape jokes aren’t funny.

Heyman did an interview on Mark Madden’s radio show. He said that Lesnar wanted him in from the start but at first he was resistant, but Lesnar pushed for it so he did it. He said one of the reasons he thinks WWE agreed to it was his ability to push Lesnar as different and how the key is to differentiate Lesnar with an entertainer like Michaels. He said he didn’t know if he’d have been as good had he been brought back to be the voice for someone else. When asked about Lesnar’s future as a fighter, he said Lesnar has had his run but if the offer was right, he’d consider going back. He said Lesnar made his money, owns three farms and can pay for his children’s education. He said Lesnar was a farmer at heart and that’s what makes him happy. He said when they talk, Lesnar talks to him about farming and uses farming lingo and Heyman said sometimes he has no idea what Lesnar is saying. Regarding coming back to run a company, he said if someone offered him the right deal with the right freedom he’d consider it, but he doesn’t think that will ever happen again. He said if the money was there and the television deal was there and the right backers were there, he said he’d be up for it. Heyman said if he ran a promotion today, it would be nothing like ECW. He said when he did ECW, he had to make new stars and so he made the choice to have them do a style that was smoke and mirrors to help people become stars. He noted when he was head of creative for Smackdown, where he had talent, it was nothing like ECW. He said ECW was a product of its time and the concepts were new to the market. Today he’d again do something new to the market. He felt at 47 he shouldn’t be on TV but he and Lesnar are having a great time with this angle.
Interesting stuff in regards to Heyman/Lesnar.

Paul Heyman has been ****ing fantastic since he's been back. He has no flaws on the mic, he can cut a promo just as good as anybody in the business.

Quote:
Jericho did an interview noting that he did originally sign a six-month contract (December through May) as he expected to be touring in June when his album came out. When the release was delayed to August, he signed three month extension that ran until the end of this month.

Amy Schumer, a comedian who dated Ziggler for a few months, was on Howard Stern this past week talking about the relationship. She was very complimentary of him, saying he was funny and smart. She said the sex was “too athletic,” but it was fun and different the first time but after that it wasn’t her cup of tea. I guess she’s not going to get into Dragon Gate tapes after the first show. She said she slept with him on the first date. She said she met him because he tried to contract her through twitter, but she didn’t know who he is. But he got his twitter followers to contact her and tell her to contact him. She said he was borderline stalking her but when the guy is hot it’s not sexual harassment. She said he’d fly in to see her at her comedy club performances and was complimentary of him. They dated for a few months until an ex-boyfriend asked her to go to Mexico on a vacation with him, so she broke up with him via Skype. The next day he went on his Facebook page and put up a photo of himself with his arm around an ex-girlfriend.

Mysterio is out of action due to a concussion suffered at SummerSlam in the match with Miz. The belief is the brain injury came from the hard power bomb Miz gave him. At TV the next day, they tested him for a concussion and found he was below his baseline, which indicated a concussion. He was pulled from both Raw and Smackdown, as well as the weekend house shows, but must have cleared testing because he was back on the 8/28 Smackdown tapings.

Regarding Austin’s surgery in July, it was full blown reconstructive surgery to repair both his ACL and PCL. He’s been doing three hours of physical therapy sessions three times a week and is hopeful of being ready for action movie roles again in January. As far as Mania this year, it’s a longshot, particularly since Rock and Lesnar are already expected on the show so if he comes back the focus can’t be on him as strong as it probably should be for his first match in nearly a decade. I was told Austin has not indicated anything like he’s looking to do another match, and if he does, would want to be 100%, have complete creative in place (which is hard with the current writing team style), think the story works and have the right opponent (all indications are he would be happy with a heel Punk as far as that goes). The odds are higher if it’s a show where his return could be the major focal point, and next year, with Rock and Lesnar committed to the show, that won’t happen. He has made it clear he doesn’t want to come back just to do so and be able to fake his way through a match, but wants to be at least for the match at a level he can be happy with.

Speaking of Cameron, after she got back from SummerSlam, she was arrested in Tampa, where she now lives, in the early morning of 8/24 on a DUI charge. Ariane Nicole Andrew, 24, was arrested at 2:44 a.m. and taken in and refused to take a Breathalyzer test. She was booked at 5:38 a.m. and released at 1:34 p.m. the next afternoon on $500 bond. She then had to fly to Missouri for a show that night in Cape Girardeau, and worked the entire tour through Raw. Hopefully she let them know, because if they found out seeing her arrest report on the Internet first, then it’ll be a clean sweep for everyone on last year’s Tough Enough show.

Due partially to the second domestic violence issue from late June where Jacqueline Beems allegedly attacked Ric Flair, the couple is going through a divorce. That would be Flair’s fourth. There was talk surfacing of Flair replacing Guerrero with Ziggler but I don’t know how serious that is. Plus, even though Flair can legally start with WWE on 9/10, WWE has yet to sign anyone from TNA since the lawsuit was filed.
at the Ziggler part. He was probably overselling sex.

Cameron (the dancer for brodus clay) better be careful. Knowing Vince she'll get replaced with Alicia Fox.

Flair's gotta stop. He's just getting married for the sake of it these days.

Turns out Cameron tried to offer the officer $10,000 if he didn't bring her to the police station because she would "lose her job". Since she didn't tell WWE what happened, and they had to find out on the internet she is good as gone.

If you say that really quickly, it sounds exactly like what BlueB said.

Re: WWE news/notes from the Observer

Going to start posting TNA news
Quote:
Regarding Punk, he was very happy to go heel. Story is that Punk realized that he was never going to surpass Cena as the top babyface, but the No. 1 heel slot is wide open. With the exception of Lesnar, who is only working limited dates, you’ve got Show, who has been around forever and is at best a stop-gap lead heel, and guys like Miz and Del Rio who were given the spot but really couldn’t hang at that level. Orton has also made it clear he wants to be a heel and he can be top heel. The problem is, they won’t turn Orton until they are fully confident Sheamus can draw as the lead face without Orton being the real top star on the Smackdown television show and house shows.

Right now the plan is Lesnar vs. HHH at Mania which will be promoted alongside probably Cena vs. Rock (or whatever matches Rock and Cena have) as the two big matches on the show. Heyman is going to be appearing more regularly than before as the antagonist as well as aligning with Punk before Lesnar starts appearing when it’s time to heat up the angle. Heyman is now under a regular contract with WWE (has been already) which I believe is now for regular Monday night appearances on Raw for the foreseeable future.

Dwayne Johnson ended up scaring some burglars in England while he was filming “The Fast and The Furious 6.” According to the story that has gotten some mainstream press, Johnson was filming a scene where he had on a flak jacket and had an FBI badge on. While this was going on, several youths had broken into a warehouse in East London. The scene had gunfire explosions and Johnson left the scene to chase the thieves who were trying to force open a lock, while waving his fake police badge. The youths “jumped out of their skin and scampered down the canal path.” Johnson himself has said nothing publicly about the incident.

Jericho did an interview on Sirius radio, saying how people think there is long-term planning but that he didn’t even know about his firing vs. Money in the Bank contract stips until 7:50 p.m. last week. Not that it mattered since it was his last show, but he was pointing out when people think things are planned out in advance that a lot of what happens is last minute. Jericho said that the business has changed and a lot of the guys in WWE are learning on the fly, noting Ziggler is one of the best guys on the roster but he’s still learning. The thing is, there is less veteran depth but in the old business, there were guys learning on the job literally from scratch. The territories’ prelim matches served as your developmental, and if you had the right look or background, you were often pushed on top way before you were ready, but in most cases, you were also working with experienced guys. He noted that he recently did a match teaming with Ryder vs. Ziggler & Miz, and when putting the match together, there were things obvious to him that they were still figuring out, but again, that’s always been the case. Jericho noted that the reason they did the heel vegan character with Bryan is because Vince hates vegans and can’t understand anyone who doesn’t eat steak, so therefore that made Bryan into a nerd. He noted again that SummerSlam for his finale he was first going to work with Sheamus for the world title, then as a face with Bryan and finally it ended up being Ziggler. He said when he got the word, he wanted to know what was the story behind the feud and they had no idea and said they’d come up with one later. He said he didn’t like that, saying without a storyline, pro wrestling is just two guys rolling around in their underwear. So he came up with the never having won the big one since he’s lost at just about every PPV show all year and turned that into the storyline. He said he doesn’t care about winning and losing and a heel can win one out of ten and be fine, but he said when he came back from the Brazil suspension he saw the crowd turning. I do know the idea of a face turn at the end of this run was something talked about. He also noted the writers saw that losing the big matches as a storyline that this guy at the end of his career is vowing to beat the young guy. He didn’t want that one. Obviously, given he’s likely coming back, the portrayal on TV now as a former star who on a given night can be competitive isn’t smart. He said he felt he was still in the best shape of his life, and noted that while he lost most of his PPV matches, he did beat Sheamus and Punk on TV and he wanted the storyline that he couldn’t win the big one. He also put over HHH for the job he’s doing backstage and that Vince is making him do everything. He’s running meetings, side projects.

The reason Kaitlyn is facing Layla at Night of Champions was because the ending of the Divas Battle Royal was botched. Eve Torres was originally booked vs. Layla on Night of Champions. I don’t know exactly how it was supposed to go, but they did the spot where Kaitlyn went to clothesline Eve over the top and she didn’t get over the top. Then they did it again, and she went over to the floor. Apparently to get over after she didn’t the first time, she jumped too hard and went to the floor when she was supposed to land on the apron and win a move or two later. That’s why everyone seemed so surprised and nobody knew what to do.
Orton news from the 2nd/double issue:

Quote:
The Orton schedule has changed once again. Now he’s back on house shows this coming weekend in Canada that he was originally off due to the movie. He is booked on Night of Champions. He’s also booked for Raw in Montreal on 9/10. As things are now scheduled, he will be gone from after the 9/15 PPV until 10/28 (Hell in a Cell PPV) except he is now advertised on all the Tuesday Smackdown tapings. So it appears that during the movie shooting schedule, they will give him Tuesdays off and keep him on television.
TNA

Quote:
Devon (Devon Hughes, 40), is no longer with the company as his contact expired at the end of August. He held the TV title and given that it was well known the contract was up for the last few months, and he’s a pro, the idea that at some point in the last month they didn’t feel the need to have him drop it tells you how valuable they see that title. That’s really unforgivable that he didn’t lose to anyone on the way out, and that they were pushing he and Garett Bischoff as a team, with no writing that pairing out. Just bad storytelling all along. This is part of the deal with them cutting back on expenses and changing people from guaranteed deals to per event deals. He wrote on twitter: “I would like to thanks the fans for making the last seven years fun. I’m sure we will see each other again down the road real soon. I’m ready to see where God brings me to next. I can’t wait. I see big things on the way. Oh and hell no, I’m not retiring.” He joins a long list of people including Alex Shelley, Ric Flair, Matt Morgan and Velvet Sky (and there’s a good chance Chris Sabin would be added to that list) who have left the company, all but Flair when their contracts expired. Devon & Bully Ray came to TNA in 2005 after their WWE contracts expired and they were not renewed. They immediately went to TNA, and had to switch from the Dudleys to Team 3-D, as WWE claimed ownership of the name since the claim was they had purchased ECW intellectual property in bankruptcy court. The duo believed they had owned rights to the name since Paul Heyman had told them he had given them the rights. It really didn’t make a difference. They had always negotiated as a group, with Bubba doing the negotiating and playing the bad guy while Devon was the nice guy. But since the two had broken up, this time they were negotiated with separately. Devon then posted a photo of himself wearing a Raw T-shirt. Once again, it’ll be interesting how long WWE waits to sign its first TNA guy since the filing of TNA’s lawsuit against WWE, and the Jerry McDevitt comment about how WWE is not interested in signing any TNA talent. Guys under contract can legally sign right now and there have been talks but nobody has yet to sign. Flair’s non-compete has a few days left, ending on 9/6.
Also, Bully Ray (Bubba Ray Dudley) signed a 2 year contract with TNA.

Re: WWE news/notes from the Observer

I know I missed a week. No big deal. All the major focus was on Lawler anyway. Here's this week's news:

Quote:
WWE

At Raw in Montreal, everyone backstage was really upset. HHH and Mysterio were noticeably crying when Lawler was backstage being worked on. HHH, who was pretty much in charge of backstage since Vince was running the TV show from the Gorilla position, and was the one who was getting all the real unvarnished information relayed to him, was the one who knew just how grave the situation was at first. Bret Hart was actually not backstage, as he was elsewhere, not realizing what had happened and trying to get ready for his segment.

We’ll have more on this next week, but WWE and All Japan Pro Wrestling have reached a business partnership. Not sure of the details. As we’ve noted, All Japan was in rough financial shape and was trying to get Bushiroad, which owns New Japan, to purchase and financially support their company.

Christian is now recovering from shoulder surgery, which went under the radar until he showed up doing the interview mentioning his surgery and with his right arm in a sling. It’s not determined how long he’ll be out of action.

The cheering for Ziggler and booing of Orton was something talked about after the fact with the idea of possibly turning one or the other. It’s well known Orton badly wants to be back as a heel, as it’s a role he’s better at. But they believe they need him as a face right now because of the depth issue there. A mentality was turning both.

Laurinaitis underwent major surgery for a torn rotator cuff and will be out of action for several months. Laurinaitis was scheduled to continue his run-ins. and Attitude Adjustments at house shows and major arenas, and at least he was told he was going to be brought back as a television character. He had complained of the shoulder injury, was taken off shows, but did work the recent Australia tour taking a few more Attitude Adjustments and by the time he then had his surgery the rotator cuff was in bad shape.

At Raw in Montreal, a funny story is that Clay appeared to be legitimately sad that he did so poorly in the viewers choice segment deal to face Punk. I guess he didn’t understand the difference between crowd popping for dancing and being a main eventer. Booker T saw how he was acting and started ribbing him about it until Clay told Booker to leave him alone.

The ref in the Punk match on Raw was Brent Wellington, 28, who was known as Brad Maddox in FCW. He never trained as a referee in Florida, only to wrestle, so this is probably a storyline that will eventually lead to him wrestling. Wellington started in OVW in 2008, and signed a WWE developmental deal and started in FCW in 2010. Another idea they are talking about is doing an instant replay storyline, where they change wrestling to where the refs can use instant replays to change calls.
Quote:
TNA

The Sting Hall of Fame Ceremony is now scheduled for 10/13 in Phoenix at a convention type fan gathering the night before Bound for Glory. No word regarding Christian appearing, as was part of the original deal. At the time it was for Bound for Glory and not the night before. Lex Luger will be appearing.

Regarding Bound for Glory, and Jeff Hardy getting the main event challenger spot instead of James Storm, there are a number of reasons. One is that for movie theater goers, not that too many are going to see it there, the idea is people may know Jeff Hardy when they go to the theater that night and look around for something to see, and they won’t know James Storm. There is also the thought process of at least the possibility that merchandise may go up, ticket sales may go up, ratings may go up (the latter probably not) and PPV may go up with a babyface Jeff Hardy established as the main event face of the promotion. Of course for that it would mean Hardy wins the title at Bound for Glory, and given how many times at the big show when it’s time for the face to go over on the big stage that they change their minds at the last minute and screw up their own guys momentum, who is to say. Put it this way, if there is anything to the mentality that since Hardy is the top guy, to build around him as the top guy, then he has to win the big one. Another key is that Hardy’s contract expires in February, and they want to make him as happy as possible so he decides to stay. While losing him wouldn’t hurt ratings, and really with the numbers they are getting these days, it may not hurt attendance that much (TNA’s crowds are way down from when Hardy first arrived and was a legit draw for them) but would be a killer when it comes to merchandise where Hardy is so far and away above everyone else that it’s not even close. Whether he can go back to WWE is a question, although history says he can. In the past, when Hardy had his issues that cost him his job, when one company finally had enough and would fire him, the other would take him back and ignore his track record, both with their own company and with the other company. Now, he’s been out of trouble for the most part and turned his life around, plus, he’s a real top tier main eventer in a company short on them. And even if Hardy wouldn’t want the WWE schedule and restrictions, the idea of the Hardy Boys together on the indie scene would allow both to make their own schedules and earn a solid income.

Devon did an interview talking about leaving TNA. He was very gracious in describing the parting of the ways, perhaps more than others who heard about it. “The deal was up as of August 28th and I was still television champion,” he said on the Monday Night Mayhem radio show. “It just so happened at that particular point in time, we were in the process of cutting a new deal, but we couldn’t cut it in time before the deadline. A lot of fans speculated different things, and rumors were running rampant. Safe to say, I have no ill feelings towards TNA at all. It’s just that we could not come to an agreement before the 28th, and then the deal ran out.” Of course, given that TNA knew that he wasn’t accepting their offer, the idea that they never asked him to lose the TV title is ludicrous. I mean, he should have been putting people over on TV the last few weeks but these days that really doesn’t matter, but not having him drop a title, even today, that’s ridiculous. Regarding WWE, he said, “I would be lying to you if I said going back to the WWE wasn’t a thought. It’s always a thought for anyone whose ever been there and then left.”

Hulk Hogan on Devon: “I have no idea. I asked Dixie and she said she’s working on it, brother.”
