Bret Hart: "Triple H kinda overrated, never had a great match"

http://rajah.com/node/32049

Quote:
I have a certain amount of respect for Triple H. I remember when he first came in, I remember commenting on stuff that he did. Because I'd usually give wrestlers my thoughts and try to help them on stuff... Triple H has always been a good wrestler. But great? What is he now, a 1,000 time world champion? How great really is he? "I look at [CM] Punk... I can look at certain wrestlers and I go, this guy is an innovator. Like a Rey Mysterio, who's done stuff that no one has ever thought of before. Punk has done stuff -- really unique moves and you go, 'gee I've never seen anything like that before.' They innovate all the time, and they create new sequences and moves and things. "Then you look at someone like Triple H. When I look at him -- he's always had a good look as far as his body went -- he always had a pretty muscular physique. But you look at someone like Hunter and you wonder, what has he really done. One move that he ever created that nobody ever saw before or some highspots or an idea for a match... He's mostly a guy that just showed up and they made him. He's always been a decent wrestler -- I would consider him a good wrestler and pretty talented. But great? I don't know, I don't think so. "What has he ever done that's great? He's never had a great match, I don't think ever. Whenever I look at Triple H's matches, including the last one he had with Undertaker -- and I don't really mean it as a knock -- but I told myself before I watched it because I'm trying to like Paul now these days, that I want to see him do something to make me think he's got greatness in him. "Before Triple H wrestled Undertaker last year, I remember watching it and going, 'I can picture the whole match in my head, I can tell you exactly what this match is going to be like and how it's going to go. And I remember watching it and it went exactly how I predicted it... I thought it was mediocre at best, maybe a 4 out of 10, or 3 out of 10. "I think Paul is a little overrated... overrated for being great. I can sit here and tell you that there was one match that he ever had with anybody that I thought was great. It's kind of a shame, he should have a great match somewhere with somebody. And you'd think that he would have had it by now, but I don't think he's a great wrestler."
Is this more bitter Bret Hart or is he right? Is HHH overrated?

I dont think HHH is one of the all time greats but i think he is definitely in that next tier. The guy was able to be successful in several different gimmicks and i have always personally enjoyed his matches.. he had some great ones with Mick Foley in the early 2000's. Hunter can be a great talker other times he can be long and boring, but overall i think he is one of the better heels in wwe history, people hated him during the mcmahon/helmsley era and during his time leading evolution.. i think if Hunter is guilty of anything it is constant overexposure during his prime run as champion

on a side note i once again think Bret comes off as an egomaniac here.. i loved him as a wrestler but the guy has to be one of the most self centered and self hyping stars in wrestling history.. sometimes it comes off as sad

Triple H has definitely had some amazing matches, but he is the 2nd stalest wrestler I've seen since I've been watching. (Cena has him beat there)

I love Bret. My all-time favorite wrestler (though Taker may take that place when it's all said and done). But he comes off very bitter. He has for a whole now. And he's a huge egomaniac. It saddens me to see it.

Re: Bret Hart: "Triple H kinda overrated, never had a great match"

Overrated is probably fair...but Bret Hart is just an old ass hater (even tho I LOVED him when he was in the WWF)

To say Triple H has never had a good match just really takes away from the point he was trying to get across here.

"and I don't really mean it as a knock -- but I told myself before I watched it because I'm trying to like Paul now these days, that I want to see him do something to make me think he's got greatness in him."

...yeah, because that sounds like the truth...

Re: Bret Hart: "Triple H kinda overrated, never had a great match"

I know there are a host of Bret Hart fans on these boards so I might get blasted for saying this, but couldn't those same comments Bret was lobbing towards HHH be directed as his career as well? I never considered him much of an innovator. Even the most counter-cultural wrestling move of his career - the Montreal Screwjob - wasn't particularly innovative. It was more like a bitter man not willing to let go of what he thought he earned... which is exactly how he still comes off in this interview.

Now feel free to blast me away.

Re: Bret Hart: "Triple H kinda overrated, never had a great match"

Triple H made the most of limited-in ring ability, much like Bret Hart made the most of being an not-entirely interesting person. Neither are guys who can do both, but both could do enough of the other to make it big.

Re: Bret Hart: "Triple H kinda overrated, never had a great match"

I'm going to go against the grain and say that I've never really enjoyed a Bret Hart match. He's the greatest technical wrestler ever and his moves are great, but he just lacked the charisma that I like to see in a match. His match is Shawn Michaels was great, but I've never seen it all because it's boring. He's a boring wrestler, I think Owen would have gone down as a better all time had he stayed alive. I can't argue that much because I haven't seen many Bret Hart matches, but that's just my opinion, he never really appealed to me.

For that matter, of course HHH's last match Undertaker was easy to predict. Taker is on his way to 60 and he's broken down, HHH hasn't been in ring shape... Bret Hart isn't a genius for knowing exactly how it was going to turn out.

Did Bret ever work with Hunter?

Triple H is definitely overrated. I think he's really good but I don't think he's one of the all time greats. As bitter as Bret sounds sometimes, I think he hit this one right on the head. I always found Triple H to be extremely stale and I always will.

Re: Bret Hart: "Triple H kinda overrated, never had a great match"

The other thing I would say regarding Bret Hart's comments about the HHH v. Undertaker match is that he is probably smart enough about in ring action that he could probably chart out, move by move, most WWE matches before they happen. The only guys that could give him trouble would be matches involving Dolph Ziggler, CM Punk, and Kofi Kingston going against each other (and with ample time) since they are really the guys who can do things we haven't seen before. That isn't to say that others aren't capable of putting on good matches, but those are the guys who can innovate.

Re: Bret Hart: "Triple H kinda overrated, never had a great match"

I dont have a problem putting HHH in the greats tier or the next tier under that. His 2000 heel run was absolutely fantastic. That run puts him at the top of my greatest HEELS list for sure. He has had great matches. VS Foley, VS Rock, and I think his matches with Taker have been awesome as well. I think that these days he is more overexposed since 2003 than he is overrated.. but that is because the product has degraded since then more than anything IMO. I think he was gold from 99-2000 to his injury pretty much. He has been good since then, but never the same.
