Thanks for the shout-out Jeff:

Schulman on 101.3 for an hour yesterday. Clarified most of the questions I had. Did say construction costs have increased, so some of the previous posts were correct about that. He is very bullish; Iím still amazed they think the new Arena will be ready for the 2020-21 season.

I haven't read all the posts on here about the new arena, but, is there a start date and where are they building it. Are they going to use the existing gym or build a new arena on campus?

VT is so long overdue with this project and desperately need to build something soon.

Start date: Most likely this winter

Location: In between Patrick gym (the basketball court) and Gutterson (the hockey rink). Patrick will be converted into a student fitness center.

Expected end date: Ready for the 20-21 season (two years!)

Re: UVM New Arena Thread

On VPR this morning Schulman said the arena will have a “slightly larger seating capacity than the current ~3200 at Patrick.”

Hopefully it’s closer to the 3,500 figure in VTDigger and Abrami’s story was inaccurate? Wouldn’t be the first time the Free Press got its facts wrong lol

Abrami's solid obviously but in this case I'm also hoping he's wrong. I get trying to keep demand high by keeping supply low, but there comes a point when you're just being daft.

Granted I'm also currently irked at the BFP for having precisely zero coverage of Monday's rally at UVM lol

I thought the ~3200-seat capacity for UVM's basketball must be one of the smaller 'arenas' in Division 1. I was surprised to see where we are (even now) on the list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...ketball_arenas

Not to pile on, because it's good that you're learning...but really, UVM fans need to actually get out to more venues. Patrick Gym's presentation and feel is obviously dated, but all the people who pull the whole "glorified high school gym" take clearly have not been to other schools facilities.

Sadly, there's been a lot of dangerous thinking that has happened around the entire facilities project for 15 years. The biggest one has long been that Patrick and Gutterson are "among the worst in D1" which willfully takes advantage of the fact UVM fans are going to use their own experiences of the places being uncomfortable to form an opinion without actually comparing these facilities to anything else, because a large majority of them won't go to anywhere else outside maybe 1-2 league school gyms. There is certainly worse out there. Way worse. This of course was perpetuated by the old AD for his pipe dream arena.

I think if people actually ventured out or took a deep dive into Google image search of some of the facilities in fellow low-major conferences they'd have a lot more prospective and appreciation for the size and scale of the current project. Couple that with understanding what UVM is as an institution and where its basketball team lies in the grand scale of college sports, and I think we'd see less of this dissent, which is largely based on antidotes and conjecture that can't be backed up by facts or number rather than on the basis of logic, actual data and realism.

What are some of the worst gyms? I want to make myself feel good about Patrick!

Re: UVM New Arena Thread

I definitely agree that Patrick Gym being one of "the worst D1 facilities" has always been overstated. To be clear however, it is absolutely very much a glorified HS gymnasium and I'd say there's a lot of other gyms in the north east/New England that Patrick Gym may not necessarily be worse than, but I'd definitely say these other gyms are on par or comparable to Patrick.

At the end of the day, if you look at the last 20 years of UVM basketball the current gym no longer aligns to the success of the UVM basketball program. UVM can do far better than playing in the same type of gym as say, Bryant or Costello at UMass-Lowell- two schools that are new to D1, or say a Dartmouth.

What's also somewhat lost in the discussions is that this project is also going to include turning Patrick Gym into rec space for the entire campus community, which will be transformative for the entire school. When I began at UVM our weight room was basically in a closet above Patrick Gym. I know this isn't what our selfish focus will be on which is a new gym to see games and recruiting, but that's going to be super important for the school.

The timeline is certainly interesting and if it really does turn out to be completed in 2 seasons I think it will have a real impact on recruiting Right Now.
