Not sure if people saw this, but the Cynic says $21.8m in commitments have been secured, according to Chair Daigle.

Wow, that's much higher than I would have guessed. Not that great when taken in context of how long they have been at it (fundraising), but still- that's a material amount of money towards the target and certainly enough that this is obviously going to actually happen.

Re: UVM New Arena Thread

It's interesting that Schulman refused to comment and give a number when asked by the Free Press and TV outlets, especially when if that number is true (I would hope it wasn't misinterpreted as something like they need $21.8 mil, not have it...it probably wasn't but you never know), it's quite the big positive. Most people thought they had like $5-7 million raised privately, tops because they'd been so tight-lipped about it. So, for it to be nearly $22 million and they need to find only $8 million more to reach your end of the goal...it just seems weird. Perhaps they want to make all these separate announcements for the secured gifts and thought they'd wait, but you know, some of us might not have been so cynical if you told us there was $22 million raised for the project, Jeff. That and the PR around it would have taken on a completely different tone, and given them way more positive press...but UVM shooting itself in the foot on the PR front is a time-honored tradition across every part of the university.

It's not limited to UVM, seems like at least one more AE schools is VERY GOOD at this shooting thing.

I imagine there are a lot of conditions placed on these commitments from the donors. It's not like UVM was given a blank check. Could be matches, dependent on what else they're able to raise, etc. so the administration showed bullishness, but shied away from providing more details due to the nature of these types of gifts and commitments.

Either way, very positive development.

For someone that is so protective of the SID staff at the school this is a hot take on the man that has delivered on the most important step this athletic department has taken in 50 years. Not sure why we need to find fault when something very good is about to happen for UVM athletics.

If the number is 8 million needed, I would expect someone to step forward. Quinnipiac's final came from TD Bank. Thus TD Bank Arena I believe it was 5 million per for at least 5 years. So maybe the there is a big gun in the area that would be interersted.
Not from Burlington, so those of you who are might have a better idea who there is in Vermont.

I was thinking about this the other day. I'm not too sure who would be interested in stepping up and forking over such a large sum. There are larger businesses like Global Foundries etc., but i'm not too sure about their philanthropic tendencies.

I bet Shulman is constrained as to what he can say. He may be well informed but having a separation between the AD and the money details is now a fairly hot topic in the NCAA and nobody wants even the slightest whiff of impropriety.

I couldn't see it be Global Foundries just because they have a major presence in the area. I would suspect some large consumer-focused financial services firm or bank. Like People's Bank, maybe Blue Cross Blue Shield. Most of the large local companies either (1) make most of their profits out of state, so connecting with local consumers does nothing or (2) are not marketing to consumers, like the Global Foundries.

On a different note, I did notice that National Life is the "title sponsor" for this year's men's basketball season. Not sure if that means anything, but its nice to know they care.

TD Bank has no connection to Qunnipiac or the state of Connecticut, which bodes well for schools courting this type of corporate investment. It's a Toronto-based bank with US headquarters in New Jersey, so buying naming rights for UVM would be just as likely as buying them at Qunnipiac.

While Burlington and Chittenden County remains smaller in population than those dense mid-atlantic states, its worth noting that this will be the flagship indoor events arena for the entire County, so in some ways it will be much more relevant--and therefore can demand a higher price for naming rights--than these other arenas, where multiple venues have to competing against each other for market share and relevance. There's no XL Center or whatever it is in Vermont.

That said, definitely not a capitalistic/money-making business. Donations will be philanthropic in nature. By themselves, anything less than an NHL/NBA arena in a major metro area will have a negative ROI.

If I were to choose one out of what you listed. It would have to be a large consumer-focused company with a major local presence; not from a jobs standpoint, but as far as where there customers are.

Please, please, please let us sell naming rights to Casella Waste Management ("The Dumpster") or King Arthur Flour ("The Sack").
