Seems to me that if we do have a redshirt, it would be Beckett, depending on how he looks in preseason. I assume Delaney came here with the expectation that he’ll be a rotation guy right away.

If you assume a 9-man rotation, I’d peg Lamb, Giddens, Everett, Moll, Davis, Shungu, Smith, Robin and Deloney. Which leaves Beckett, Nash and Patella odd men out, along with the walk ons. My guess is that one of those three guys surprises to the upside and presses somebody for minutes. At the very least, it’s great insurance for the inevitable injuries or foul trouble.

Definitely first world problems to have.

Also when you think about it this way, it argues to just roll the last scholarship unless you find a really, really nice transfer fit.

Re: 2019-20 Vermont Catamounts

My only reservations about Giddens have to do with fouls. He seems to get called for them a lot and I hope the coaching staff can help him out as well as they did Dingba and Davis.

He also shoots FTs at about 50%. He's going to get fouled for sure in the AE and I would be delighted if he could get to at least 70%. Again, it is a player development issue that the UVM coaches seem to be so expert at.

I think going against smaller, less talented opponents will help with the foul issues. Non-conference maybe will be a little more difficult, but proper positioning and knowing what chances to take can be learned.

Re: 2019-20 Vermont Catamounts

Just for comparison sake:

In 2 years at Alabama, Giddens averaged ~2.5 personal fouls per game,
and averaged ~14 minutes of playing time per game.

In 2 years at UVM, Dingba averaged ~1.8 personal fouls per game
while averaging 11.9 minutes per game

Cool stat. I wonder what the fouls per minute would be? My guess is for their career, Dingba played fewer minutes on average.

My thought is this: "Don't count your chickens before they hatch" Assuming that Giddens will be a significant contributor based on his size or where he's been is premature at best. It sounds as though he's been prone to foul trouble in the past. If you remember, Dingba didn't start and get much playing time until he cleaned up his silly fouls. Also, Becker has no patience for guys that do not know the defensive rotations. It shouldn't be assumed that Giddens will roll in and understand how our defensive scheme works.

Furthermore...injuries happen...depth can disappear very quickly.

Are there things to be excited about? Sure, but let's not talk about pitching a no hitter in the 5th inning...

Does anyone know? Did Shungu get a scholarship yet? He was a walk on originally. If he hasn't, I'd have to believe that he gets the last one.

Re: 2019-20 Vermont Catamounts

For me, Giddens is potentially a great addition to an already very deep team. Deloney looks like another potentially great addition, but VT Cats Fan is right. Nobody is going to see game minutes unless they can defend within the system without silly fouls. That's just the way it is at UVM, and it's a big reason why the team is so successful.

I believe he was on scholarship last season. He certainly deserves it.

Shungu is on scholarship. Was given to him in April 2018.

Often times a player fouls when he's facing a bigger or quicker opponent. Giddens won't need to foul against AE competition. The toughest player he'll see will be Anthony Lamb in practice.

Re: 2019-20 Vermont Catamounts

Going on the players we have.

I would believe the two freshman walk-ons are going to sit for the year. if Lorenzo can sit a year, that would also be great. Of the players coming in I would believe Beckett for a redshirt, alos anyone who gets injured (hopefully none).
I like Patella as our defensive stopper against the 6'5 guards and the quicker small forwards. Thought he did a great job last year in that role. he may also be ready to come on a little more offensively.
Nash, it would be great to see him take the floor and play the way he was projected.
Wish him the best. Also keep up the good work off the floor.
This team looks ready to contend next year, for a 12-13 seed and I think could in
the worst case scenario, get an at large bid to NIT if they don't win league regular season.

Re: 2019-20 Vermont Catamounts

If we don't win the leauge regular season, it means we lost at least 2 (if not 3) conference games (IMHO), which means we better have blown away the OOC schedule. I just don't see us (or an AE team) getting an at large bid to the NIT based on this
