Re: Phil Martelli Must Go

You serious? And who of Martelli's quality will take over the helm at little St Joe's? Your program has been extremely fortunate to have had Martelli running the program over the past decade. Lesser coaches would not have been able to overcome the lack of facilities and other difficulties that come with being St Joseph's University.

Re: Phil Martelli Must Go

Gonzaga and X compete every year nationally.

Both schools of similar size to St. Joe's.
That's what I am expecting.

Phil had a winning ticket with Jameer and Delonte 2000-04 and did not take advantage of the recruiting advantages, let alone being diectly responsible for quality transfers out such as Jalloh, Carter and Rivera.

2004-09 we have a one and done in the NCAA tourney 2008 and that is it.
Gee...thanks Phil!

Gonzaga and Xavier have facilities that are far superior. No comparison, in fact. Given what he has to work with, I think Martelli does a lot.

We have a lot more schools to compete against for recruits than Gonzaga and Xavier.

That's absurd.

First of all, Xavier recruits nationally, even with an emphasis in the NY/Eastern area with Book Richardson on board. I doubt almost by definition that Martelli isn't in more places competing for recruits than is Miller's staff.

Secondly, even if we stayed in say the tri-state area, do you expect me to believe that you have it harder against us when we're going against, UK, UL, Ohio State, Indiana, Purdue, ND, etc.?

Re: Phil Martelli Must Go

Hawk fans actually are arguing that they are a better program than Zags, who have made the tourney 10 straight years.

Saying that the Zags have been to 2 Elite 8s compared to SJU one in recent years...laughable

This is an A10 board. No one cares about the infighting being mentioned from another board in which you have been banned.

Start your own SJU board if you think the Hawk board is being run improperly. That's what some Xavier fans did, and it has worked out pretty darn well.

Re: Phil Martelli Must Go

Just thank the Good Lord that Phil Martelli is your team's coach. Who else could have produced the same consistently fine results with a high school like gym for his home playing facility and, if we are to believe HAWK77, a recruiting budget that prevents him from reaching beyond the Penn/New Jersey/New York area for his players?

If he's made one mistake, it has been his failure to parlay his many successes into extorting the St. Joe's brass into upgrading its home playing facilities to match those of Gonzaga, Creighton, Marquette, Georgetown, and Xavier (if only by sharing a bigger one with another tenant). Perception is everything. If you provide a first-class facility in which to view your product, people will begin to believe that you are a first-class program, even if you play in a non-Big Six conference like the A-10.

Have you looked at the attendance figures of Creighton, Marquette, and the others? Have you seen what Villanova's been able to do in Philly? I'd have to believe that if Coach Martelli had the same type of playing venues as Villanova has, St. Joe's would be a much bigger blip on the radar! The Hawks have consistently drawn well at Alumni. How many people don't show up there because it is either too small or because they would prefer the feeling of "FIRST CLASS" over "QUAINT."

I just want the team I support to be in a stronger conference. I'd prefer it to be a stronger A-10! To me that would mean every member would have at least 2 trips to the NCAA Tourney and 5 winning seasons during each 10-year cycle. It would also be great for every program to seriously challenge for a league title (either regular season or Tourney) at least once during that same period of time.

Agreed, don't bash other boards on this forum. If you don't like then start your own "Phil must go" board... we experienced the same problem with Speedy - after Lionel left we were good for a few more years but then all of the sudden the coach thinks he is a celebrity.

Gonzaga is in Spokane (I don't care what the facilities are, it's still Spokane). Check out that conference (somehow they do the best recruiting job in the country, pound for pound)

Gonzaga has set the standard for small schoold their size.

SJU used the Zags program as a template in attempting to build winning consistency.

Re: Phil Martelli Must Go

Even worse is the fact that we are looking at 2-3 horrible years to follow with Nivins graduating.

I believe Phil has recruited well with Crosgile, Jones, Baptiste coming in followed by Quarles the following year, but by the time this all blends together, we may have a shot at being on the NCAA Bubble in 2012.

What a waste to not be able to surround the A-10 POY (Nivins) with any decent talent.

Anyone who disagrees with the argument that Phil has run this program into the ground must be a member of the Hawk Hoop Club.
