Quote:
AMHERST — It could have been the maroon suit movement.

When UMass men’s basketball coach Matt McCall was getting fitted by Dressed to the Nines, a Connecticut haberdashery, the clothier asked him what he thought of getting a full suit in UMass’ primary color. McCall didn’t think that was for him, but liked the idea of maroon pants.

It didn’t occur to him then or when he put the pants on last week that the pants were part of anything other than his outfit.

But athletic director Ryan Bamford, who puts a fair amount of emphasis on his own clothing, saw a promotional opportunity in McCall’s pants.

Bamford, who tweeted about the pants before and after the game, said on Twitter that he’d donate $1 to the Court Club, the men’s basketball program’s booster organization, for every fan who arrived in sweats, knickers, bloomers, slacks, jeans or any other leg wear similar in color to McCall’s:

“I will personally donate $1 for every fan that comes to the Mullins Center wearing maroon pants & checks in at our fan experience table to be counted. An extra $250 if attendance 5k. Anyone else want to make a pledge?”

Prominent donor John Kennedy, the namesake of the practice facility, and Five College Movers each agreed to match Bamford’s $1 per pant-wearer promise.

Five College Movers added a wrinkle pledging $500 extra if Jim Hunt, an Amherst dentist and passionate courtside amateur referee evaluator, agreed to wear maroon and white striped overalls.

That’s expected to occur as Five College Movers tweeted a photo of the dentist in candy-cane colored clothing.

As the week progressed, UMass announced $10 tickets for anyone in maroon pants and a contest for the best/most outrageous maroon pants.

“I’m not one to draw a lot of attention to myself,” McCall said. “But anytime you can get fans excited and get more people in the stands, I’m all for it.”

DAYTON'S CUNNINGHAM CLAIMS SECOND ATLANTIC 10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARD

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Dayton junior Josh Cunningham has been chosen as the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Fordham freshman Ivan Raut was selected the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards, announced Monday, are for games played Dec. 11-17.
Cunningham led Dayton to Saturday's overtime win with a career-high 29 points and 18 rebounds in UD's only game last week. He scored Dayton's first four points in overtime that brought the Flyers from three back to a lead they would not give up. His final points were a pair of free throws that gave Dayton a two-possession margin. He entered the game with a UD-record 22 consecutive field goals made over his last three games. The Chicago native missed his first shot, but then reeled off eight straight buckets to finish the game. Cunningham has made 30 of his last 31 field goal attempts. He was 8-of-9 (.889) from the field and 13-for-17 (.765) at the line. It’s the second A-10 Player of the Week award for Cunningham, who also earned the honor the first week of the season.
Raut scored a game-high 19 points, shooting 6-for-12 (.500) from the field, including 5-for-10 (.500) from behind the arc in Fordham’s game against Rutgers. The guard/forward from Kotor, Montenegro, connected on two four-point plays over a 23-second span in the first half.

Re: Around the League

Fix - Dayton pushing their influence around the A10, just like Xavier did before they left. (big sh|t eating grin and wink)

Perhaps well deserved for playing just one game, many athletes can excel for one frigin' game. (-:

Re: Around the League

Don't think it's been mentioned here, but Tyler Cavanaugh was picked up on a two year contract with the Hawks. He was previously on a two-way G-League contract and took full advantage when he was called up. Bembry is also playing with the Hawks.

I'll go someplace, buy Ace a beer, and drink my bourbon.

Didn't they hire their new AD as a plan to get into the Patriot League?

Never had the opportunity to buy Ace a beer, as much as I would have liked to have done so. But, the calls for dropping the Bonnies from the league used to be plentiful. Ready for this. Fuck all of you for that. You know who I am speaking to.
