just for fun...RI is now #5 in the RPI, behind only Virginia/Clemson/X/Nova and followed immediately by Duke and Kansas

Re: Around the League

The Dukes seem committed to excellence with sports. The basketball program nice coaching hire and football, signing 5 FBS transfer players from the P5.

Quote:
These 20 student-athletes will join the Dukes' program which has won four Northeast Conference (NEC) titles in the last seven seasons. Duquesne has recorded 20 winning seasons in the last 23 years.

The Dukes open the 2018 campaign at UMass on Saturday, Aug. 25.

Re: Around the League

I wonder if jp will have to re-evaluate the approach to the whole RPI thing.

URI this year will play 29 games before the tournament. (not 31)
They didn't go away to some island for a 3 day deal. They went down to New York and played 2 games.

They have played 4 Group 1 games, and won only 1 of them.
They played 2 true road game OOC, and were 0-2 in those, both Group 1.
They won 1 of 2 Group 1 games at a neutral site.

They only have one more opportunity for a Group 1 win; at Bona.

Yet, their RPI is #5 and their OOC SOS was 3.

Bracket preview show is on right now, it's interesting to see if URI gets into the top 16 teams or at least the discussion that follows

I didn't see them.
Now I do. #5 slot.
But nice little ad on CBS for the URI/UR game this week.

URI this year....
You're missing the point of my "whole RPI Philosophy."

URI is the flag bearer. They went to the Second Round last season, got screwed in a tight loss to a Final Four team, and returned damned near everyone. They need to go get the marquee wins for the conference, because they're capable of doing it.

The JP philosophy is for the BOTTOM TEAMS:

Be Duquesne. Don't be Fordham, Richmond, George Mason and George Washington

Fordham went 0-4 vs BCS teams and finished 5-7 OOC.
Richmond went 0-3 vs BCS teams and finished 2-10 OOC
Mason went 0-3 vs BCS teams and finished 6-7 OOC
GW went 0-5 vs BCS teams and finished 7-6 OOC.

Duquesne played then 348 OOC SOS, ONE OOC opponent in the top HALF of the RPI.
- 7-0 vs RPI 245+ (248, 271, 300, 327, 339, 350, 351
- 9-4 OOC (2-4 vs 1-244 of RPI).

Look at what each team does to the SOS of URI and Bona:

GMU - .4400 (11-14)
RICH- .3750 (9-15)
FORD- .3750 (9-15)
GWU - .4000 (10-15)

DUQ - .5769 (15-11)

AVG: .4333 in 5 games for everyone else in the league (But you'll play those guys between 5-7 times)

If all five of those teams scheduled like DUQ, it would be (conservatively) a .5554 average in those five games.

That's five games helping our top half's RPIs/SOS instead of four games hurting them.

Personally, I believe that a smaller league would be better than what we have now. Eleven teams in the top 100 RPi playing a 20 game conference schedule would be ideal. More TV and NCAA money. Heíll, I would even advocate for a better split of NCAA units if the money was spent to better the basketball programs.

I am not an advocate of kicking programs out the league, so I am going back to watching my Flyerís shitting the bed.
I'm with you on a lot of that.

I once did number crunching on LaSalle vs Siena.

Siena is a program with multiple NCAA bids and a better win percentage than La Salle over a 20-year period.

But if you broke down 20 years worth of performance for them by their win percentages vs RPI ranges, and gave them an equal number of games, they're the EXACT SAME PROGRAM.

I'm just lobbing estimates here, I don't have the data anymore:
Siena is about .100 vs Top 50 RPI teams, so is LaSalle.
Siena is about .300 vs RPI 51-100 teams, so is LaSalle.
Siena is about .580 vs RPI 101-200 teams, so is LaSalle.
Siena is about .650 vs RPI 201-350 teams, so is LaSalle.

The difference is the number of games played vs each group.

LaSalle is going 9-51 vs Top 50 teams over 20 years, and 65-35 vs RPI 201+
Siena is going 3-17 vs Top 50 teams over 20 years, and 91-49 vs RPI 201+

LaSalle would have a better win percentage and more NCAA bids in the MAAC. That's true.

But LaSalle would get worse recruits, worse exposure and piss off their fans by dropping down to the MAAC. But they'd get more exposure and more happy fans if they got the MAAC autobid.

It would probably be better for the Atlantic 10 if LaSalle did, no offense Explorers. But it's really six of one, half a dozen of the other in terms of their program's long term success.

Contraction of the right schools makes the A10 stronger. I don't advocate kicking out. Lord knows we've borne the brunt of that wrath and it'd be a total douche move of a Bona fan to start calling for anyone's exit. At this point if La Salle left it would be addition by subtraction. But they've been a valuable contributor in the last 5 years.

I think this tweet/post whatever it was is hogwash. No one actively looks to go MAAC from the A10.
I'd agree to all of that. When you look at the top candidates to replace LaSalle, Siena would be up there and that's not saying much.

Jordan Goodwin suspended for the rest of the season but cleared of sexual assault.

Well, that was fun while it lasted.

Wow

I still do not understand how he was the only one of the accused that was allowed to play.

Re: Around the League

On the subject of Goodwin. It seems that they gave preferential treatment to a star player in hopes that he would not leave the program. He sent out pictures of an orgy without consent just like the other three players who have been on suspension all season. This seems unethical to me.
