Is that on the coach? The athletic director? It does seem very slimy.

I am not sure. Probably all of the above and the SLU President.

Here is an article with some information and a statement from Goodwin.

But the kangaroo court led by radical women feminists were biased against the black player! #FireFred

(The above is a synthesis of the several thousand posts on Billikens.com regarding "S2")

Re: Around the League

Because I was watching LaSalle and thinking about it...

The whole "we'd be better without the traditionally not that strong teams -- look at the Big XII and Big East!" thing is misleading.

It's GOOD to have "bad teams" in the league (as long as they're winning a baseline amount of OOC games).

The Big XII: 90-90 in conference play. Add FAU & FIU, each going 1-17.
Everyone else is 106-64 instead of 90-90. They'd put at least nine, maybe 10 into the dance.

You want the bottom third of your league to schedule easy, go 9-3 or better OOC, and then when they get whipped in conference, they're not hurting anyone's RPI.

My "problem" with LaSalle isn't that usually a bottom half team. That's fine. The problem is how rarely they have good OOC seasons. Maybe five seasons of 9-3 or better OOC in the last 25 years.

And most of that is because they've got Big Five games vs Villanova, Temple, Penn. And Drexel gets up for LaSalle, because that's the Big Five team they can beat.

And their budget is small, so they're scheduling Miami, Boston College, Northwestern (and Bucknell) for exposure or guarantees.

Using this year as an example, we want:
Three Rhode Islands (Ranked/getting votes, Top 6 NCAA seeds)
Three Bonaventures (NCAA safe to bubble range)
Four Davidsons (NIT teams)
Four Duquensnes (good OOC results vs weak schedules)

That's what we had in 2014:
SLU, VCU, GW (ranked/getting votes)
SJU, UMass, Dayton (24-26 wins, NCAA)
RICH (19-14), BONA (17-15), LAS (15-16)
URI, DUQ, GMU, FOR (all winning OOC records)

I'd rather see LaSalle build a new arena they can recruit with and be consistently winning OOC games (And I'd rather see Fordham cut sports and become more efficient and consistently win OOC games). But those both seem like unlikely decisions, so I wouldn't mind seeing LaSalle be MAAC champions every other year and Fordham winning the Patriot League every other year.

Now you sound like an Xavier fan, suggesting what the league (other teams) should do including de-emphasizing football and then leave the conference. Does this mean Dayton is ready to exit stage left in 4 years.

Re: Around the League

La Salle belongs in the A10, but their gym needs to be replaced in a BIG way. That’s a MAAC facility through and through. The same goes for Fordham. There is no reason that every school in the A10 can’t be a consistently solid program. There is no need for anyone to leave, but some houses need cleaning/renovation.

Don't have strong feelings one way or the other regarding whether LaSalle chooses to leave. There is no great advantage to have both the #3 and the #4 Basketball team in one city.

Re: Around the League

I'm not advocating kicking anyone out of the league, or giving ultimatiums. What each school does is their choice.

I'm just saying as someone who's qualified for commentary on athletic departments, that's what I'd do in those various situations. No one has a problem with me saying "I'd love to see La Salle spend money on a new arena to up their game" but I'm suddenly a dick for saying "If I was running Fordham, I'd trim their sports menu so they can spend more money on fewer sports, which would up their game." ??

That makes no sense.

I'm also not looking down on any school, or saying "They're a problem! How dare they." Or comparing them to MY school.

MY School should build a new arena, and have an efficient sports menu. I feel the same way about everyone. These things I'm talking about are fundamental truths. There's no judgements being passed on anyone.

I brought up Fordham because Ace and I talked about that topic pages back in this very thread. He wasn't offended at all by my comments and said there's a number of people on Fordham boards that feel the same way.

We talked about EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES of sports trimming for the best overall athletic department of Fordham athletics:
https://www.basketballforum.com/14889370-post1712.html

That's not "Cut sports so you're better at basketball." That's a battle plan so Fordham has an increase in resources and funding for half their current programs (and a two-thirds of their programs going forward).

There's a huge difference between "What's best for Fordham athletics?" and Xavier fans saying "Fudge you guys for not being us."

I am glad we weren't included.

As much as my disdain for the traveling wing flapper, SJU belongs. They did a major improvement to the locker room, offices and an expansion of their facility. Granted was surprise how little bang for the buck they got with their increased capacity.

Re: Around the League

JP, it's not necessarily your suggestions. It's the timing and the fact that it's coming from a Bonnie. I don't doubt your passion, intelligence, and knowledge. I question your discretion at times.
