No one has a problem with me saying "I'd love to see La Salle spend money on a new arena to up their game" but I'm suddenly a dick for saying "If I was running Fordham, I'd trim their sports menu so they can spend more money on fewer sports, which would up their game." ??

That makes no sense.

I'm also not looking down on any school, or saying "They're a problem! How dare they." Or comparing them to MY school.

MY School should build a new arena, and have an efficient sports menu. I feel the same way about everyone. These things I'm talking about are fundamental truths. There's no judgements being passed on anyone.

I brought up Fordham because Ace and I talked about that topic pages back in this very thread. He wasn't offended at all by my comments and said there's a number of people on Fordham boards that feel the same way.

We talked about EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES of sports trimming for the best overall athletic department of Fordham athletics:
https://www.basketballforum.com/14889370-post1712.html

That's not "Cut sports so you're better at basketball." That's a battle plan so Fordham has an increase in resources and funding for half their current programs (and a two-thirds of their programs going forward).

There's a huge difference between "What's best for Fordham athletics?" and Xavier fans saying "Fudge you guys for not being us."
The difference then and now is this comment:
"But those both seem like unlikely decisions, so I wouldn't mind seeing LaSalle be MAAC champions every other year and Fordham winning the Patriot League every other year."

Since they seem unlikely, you are basically advocating for them being in a different conference. It's clearly not going to be well received by all.

Ahem.

I can't speak for anyone else, but for some reason I was particularly offended by the comment about Fordham winning the Patriot League every other year.

Adonal Foyle. Wonderful. I remember the Bonnies beating Foyle's Colgate squad in a neutral site game at the downtown arena in Buffalo. That Bona team was led by the likes of Shandue McNeil, Rashaan Palmer, and, I think, a young Tim Winn. Those decent-but-not-great teams would probably frustrate the hell out of me now, but I treasure my childhood memories of them.

That's valid. I do want to make it absolutely clear that I'm not saying that as "A Bona FAN looking at other conference programs" I'm saying that as "Guy who worked in athletic departments at five different schools in the 7th to 10th rated conferences in basketball."

I said La Salle should build a new basketball arena as soon as they can get money for it. So should Saint Mary's, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, Pacific, San Francisco; East Carolina, Houston, Marshall, SMU, Southern Miss, Tulane and about 100 other schools. I said Fordham should cut some sports. UC Davis, Pacific, Cal and Stanford should cut Field hockey because no one West of Missouri State has field hockey.

I said these things like posters on a baseball board say "The Giants got McCutchen and Longoria, which help their offense, but they totally should have gotten a lefty bat instead of McCutchen. They'd be better off with Jay Bruce, because the RF foul pole is 309 feet away." Or the Rays and Athletics need to build new stadiums. I'm a Mets fan, my team is a total shitshow. But that doesn't mean I'm wrong about Oakland needing a new ballpark, you know?

I would assume you guys would know from almost a decade of conversations on this site, that I didn't mean it the same way the Xavier fans used to.

Each school is going to chart their own path. UMass is charting their path with FBS football, like Temple and Charlotte did. We don't expect UMass to be an Atlantic 10 school for the next 100 years. I fully support each school doing what's in their best interest.

I root for Xavier & Butler in the Big East, Charlotte in C-USA, and Temple in the American now. Not at the expense of the A-10's at-large chances, but over other teams I never rooted for OOC and in March. I'd root for Fordham to win the Patriot if they decided to join it. I'd root for LaSalle to win the MAAC if they decided to join it. I'd root for SLU to win the MVC if they decided to join it. I'll root for UMass to go undefeated in football and get a BCS invite. Not because of what it means for us, but because that's THEIR GOAL. That's what they want. And I don't have a dog in that fight.

Remember, I'm also the same guy who said seven years ago that "The Atlantic 10 is going to be fine. We'll be a multi-bid league, we're going to keep averaging three bids even without Xavier, Temple, Butler and Charlotte. The sky isn't falling."

If I said "I don't mind. We'll be fine" about Xavier and Temple, why would you expect me to say something besides "I wouldn't mind" about LaSalle possibly leaving?

If I was RUNNING La Salle or Fordham, would I leave the Atlantic 10? Hell no! But if that's the way an administration decides, I just run RPI math and see where we are without them moving forward, and wish them the best. It's not like they're going to call me and say "Make an argument to us to convince to stay."

... and yet how many of those programs will rob law-abiding schools of NCAA bids, units, and millions of dollars? How many schools have been similarly robbed in the past? We are talking about millions and millions of dollars being funneled to specific leagues/programs through illegal activity... and their success has bred better recruits, more TV exposure, more TV money, and, in turn, more success. Do we hear a peep about this from the national media, which has the aforementioned TV deals signed with most, if not all, of those 50+ schools? Frauds. All of them.

There are a bunch of Adidas schools in the A10. Hope it doesn't reach this far.

Re: Around the League

The Yahoo story is interesting but its content in terms of the pervasive 'rule breaking' isn't something many of us would find to surprising. Assuming the information in the protective order makes its way into the public domain, then what? There will be some indignation, people calling for changes etc. but what can the feckless NCAA really do? The coaches, players and others have already cashed the checks. The University of No Classes carried out its appeal for years. Imagine 40-50 institutions doing the same. Maybe this will be the impetus for the power programs to exit the NCAA and form their own association with their own 'rules' and media contracts.

Unfortunately, the two bolded sentences you wrote are the case. The NCAA can't do anything about it because it would lead to the mass exodus. Conferences like ours should not want that under any circumstance. So what do we have to do? Bitch about it being unfair but in the end, just take it for what it is. The P5 won't hesitate to jump. And if you think TV, tournaments, and money are unfairly balanced now, wait until 275 schools are relegated to sub-D1 afterthought status.

It absolutely sucks. No doubt about that. But does the alternative suck more?

The one quote (I can't take the time to look it up right now) from a source familiar with the FBI probe indicated that this isn't about "mid-major" schools trying to get top recruits to GET to the top. It is about already-top programs vying with each other to STAY on top. We'll see, though...
