First to Worst

For those of you that have followed the A10 longer than I have, who (if anyone) was the last team to go from first to worst in the conference?

Unless SLU wins out, they will do it this year.

The jury is in on Crews and the verdict is, as many of us suspected, that he's just not a very good coach.

I'm not saying a word.
Nor am I going to remind anyone of our conversation this late summer...

St Joes came close in, going from 1st in 96-97 to 2nd to last in 97-98. Only Fordham kept them out of the cellar. Interesting that the website only has division standings for 4 years and not the 6 years prior to that.

Re: First to Worst

URI and SBU fans should be happy that Fordham came into the league because had they not then URI and SBU would have the most last place finishes.

OK I lied.

Let me say that I really like SLU.
I like being in a conference with them and we've been in several together(ud/slu).

Quality program.
Great place to play.
Fine history.
yaddy yadda yadda.

I think we could be great rivals.
(maybe we should buddy around)

I don't even hold it against them that Crews is employed there.
Coach Weirdo brought him on board and what can you do?
It was a tough situation.

But then I read this....

ESPN's best college coaches.

No. 35: Phil Martelli, Saint Joseph's
No. 34: Tad Boyle, Colorado
No. 33: Fran McCaffery, Iowa
No. 32: Tim Miles, Nebraska
No. 31: Lon Kruger, Oklahoma
No. 30: Bob Huggins, West Virginia
No. 29: Jim Crews, Saint Louis
No. 28: Jim Larranaga, Miami
No. 27: Mick Cronin, Cincinnati
No. 26: Archie Miller, Dayton
No. 25: Jamie Dixon, Pittsburgh
No. 24: Bob McKillop, Davidson
No. 23: Greg McDermott, Creighton
No. 22: Tommy Amaker, Harvard
No. 21: Larry Brown, SMU
No. 20: Thad Matta, Ohio State
No. 19: Jay Wright, Villanova
No. 18: Steve Fisher, San Diego State
No. 17: Mark Few, Gonzaga
No. 16: Roy Williams, North Carolina
No. 15: Fred Hoiberg, Iowa State
No. 14: Tony Bennett, Virginia
No. 13: Shaka Smart, VCU

And I almost sharted myself..
I was thinking this guy can't coach a flippin lick.
The 80's called and they want their coach back
Then the folks at SLU started to believe this ESPN nonsense.

I hope they can Crews.
The sooner the better.

SLU is too good to be bogged down with a lousy coach.

Whats good for SLU is good for the a-10 and whats good for the a-10 is good for Dayton.

And while he passes through the doors @ SLU the last time, my hope is the door slams him directly in the face.
Because KARMA'S a bitch..

Re: First to Worst

Ya...the ESPN list was a joke and most of us knew it. But, lots of people appear to have needed to see what Crews would do with his own players at SLU to see how bad it could be.

Re: First to Worst

I don't remember many SLU fans "believing" the ESPN nonsense. If anything, many were skeptical, most were cautiously optimistic; I can't fault a fan base for being cautiously optimistic. Big Rick may have laid the foundation, but SLU didn't just coach themselves the last 2 seasons. SLU was pretty much forced into resigning Crews, how could you not give the man a chance? I wish the school & program a speed recovery back to at least middle of the pack, if not back near the top. For the A10 to be at the top, it needs its resource heavy programs like SLU to be solid.

Re: First to Worst

They were forced into him for a year, they were not forced to sign him to a medium length contract.

SLU lacked the foresight to understand there was always going to be a rebuild after Jett and company graduated. They willingly gave that job to an old guy who has proven over the span of 30 some years that he is average at best.

I just wonder how many kids decide the losing was too much and transfer after this year. A couple of those frosh leaving would set them back another 2-3 years unless Crews left with them.

anyone who was paying attention knew that because his track record said he was an average coach at best.

There are a lot of guys who can win with a team created by someone else but they lack the abilities to create a winner on their own.

SLU created their own problem because the AD did not have a big enough pair to thank Crews for his interim year and move on. What was likely to come to pass was not difficult to forecast.
