Paxson: Forman deserves to be NBA executive of the year

Quote:
On Sunday, Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said John Paxson and Gar Forman should be executives of the year over the Heat's Pat Riley.

On Monday, Paxson offered his take to the Tribune.

"I truly appreciate what Stan said," he said. "But the right thing for other general managers to do if they choose to vote for the leadership of the Bulls' organization is to put Gar's name there. He's done a tremendous job. Gar has been carrying the duties of the day-to-day operations for us for two seasons now and I truly respect everything he has done to put us in the position where both the present and future are bright."

Team Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf promoted Forman to general manager on May 21, 2009. Paxson remained in his role as executive vice president of basketball operations but has assumed a more behind-the-scenes approach.

Riley signed one of the greatest players of all time in LBJ, signed the second best available big man and put together a championship caliber team, the con's are that he did not put together a decent bench.

The Thunder re-signed Kevin Durant a mega star talent to stay in Oklahoma City, traded for Kendrick Perkins and the Thunder are still headed in a championship direction, con's they still haven't locked up Russell Westbrook.

Garpax struck out on their 3 top targets, Lebron, Bosh, Amare and to a lesser extent Wade and ended up with the 3rd or 4th best available big man in Boozer but Garpax was able to sign a very good bench if not the best bench in the NBA and finally pulled the trigger on hiring Tom Thibs.

No GM is really running away with the award, everyone one of these GM's had their pro's and con's.

Give it to Dwyane Wade, not Pat Riley. Riley just prepared the paperwork.

Btw, regarding Riley for GM of the Year...Kyrv over at realgm had this to say, which basically sums up my thoughts:

Quote:
Miami had the biggest FA haul in the history of US team sports.

The players arranged it, and the Heat cheated, both of which can be used to not vote for them. Barring these, they would win easily, and still might. Nobody has to factor those in and in fact one can make a good argument that one or both should not be considerations. But each voter gets to decide for himself.
In other words, leave it to each individual voter to decide to what extent Riley's involvement (or lack thereof) should influence his winning the award. I personally think the award is every bit about the process by which the team was built (i.e., personnel acquired per resources available, and how well they fit to make a great team), as it is about the results. I know many people disagree and think only about the result, which in Riley's case is netting the biggest FA coup in NBA history.

It's funny though, Riley's situation is so unique and unheard of...I've never had to think about the friggin GM of the year award so deeply.

This award is voted on by other executives (can't vote for yourself BTW). No way they don't vote for Riley, who demoralized 29 teams by signing one superstar player (LBJ) and an anorexic PF.
