Aaron Brooks re-signs

https://twitter.com/ESPNSteinLine/st...80948435234817

Point guard market was thin and getting overpaid. I think the Bulls tried to upgrade backup PG, but ultimately their lower-level exception wasn't enough money to lure anyone.

I wasn't too thrilled with how Aaron played overall, but he is better than most of the remaining options, and his 3-pt shooting should come in handy. Hopefully we eventually can land an upgrade via trade later in the season. Really need a backup PG who can lead the 2nd unit, facilitate ball movement, and defend. Aaron can shoot/score, but lacks in these areas.

Re: Aaron Brooks re-signs

I don't think there is an issue with him - he's a decent guy to bring off the bench with his energy and ability to score. With what the market looks like, I think this was the right move.

Re: Aaron Brooks re-signs

I agree it was the right move, mainly b/c the reports I'm seeing say he is re-signing on the vet minimum (+20% or so compared to his salary last year) and it is only for 1 year. So we may still have the LLE which we can use on a wing player for depth, and that gives us some needed flexibility for a trade. Also the Bulls will have a decent amount of expiring salary to include in a potential trade...Noah ($13M), Brooks ($1.5M), Hinrich ($3M), Moore ($1M), Bairstow ($1M). That is key if there's some team seeking to unload a good player with a big salary mid-season. We could jump in and offer all these expirings + draft picks, and suddenly we alleviate the log jam and boost the starting lineup. Just gotta be patient because I don't see that happening this summer, more of a trade deadline move.

In any case, Brooks does provide something (speed, shot creation, shooting) and as a 5th guard in our rotation he is great. But as it stands he is more like our 3rd or 4th guard, and we really could use a PG who is bigger, defends, and facilitates an offense. Especially when Rose can sit out anytime.

I am fine with Brooks on a minimum deal, but wish they had been able to secure a decent defensive combo guard type with the MMLE. At this point, it doesn't even seem like there are good candidates out there to use the MMLE on. They might as well just hold onto it in case someone gets cut/bought out as the season progresses, to allow them to potentially outbid other teams that are only able to offer the minimum.

I must say I have some apprehension going into next season if Brooks/Kirk/Etwan are the only options behind Rose, given Rose's injury history. Though I suppose like any other year, the Bulls are probably screwed if Rose goes down anyway.

I think Norris Cole would fit that description and would be a good fit in that role but he is probably going to get a bit more than that MMLE

Re: Aaron Brooks re-signs

Nothing wrong with Aaron Brooks staying on for his instant offense role off the bench. He was our 2nd best 3 point shooter last season that had any attempts. We need shooters.

The glaring problem at guard is of course Hinrich. That isn't Brooks' fault.

Re: Aaron Brooks re-signs

Jeremy Lin apparently signed for a little over $2M per year with Charlotte. That's both surprising and disappointing. I thought Lin would've been a great fit here playing first guard off the bench, and we easily could've paid him that. For that matter so would a lot of teams. Wonder why he took such a pay cut when other PGs are getting big pay days. There must've been something he really liked about Charlotte. Maybe he is just sick of being scrutinized in big city markets (NY, LA, Houston), which would explain why Chicago and Dallas couldn't land him.

And now it appears Brooks was signed using at least a portion of the MMLE rather than just on a minum deal. Ugh.

Re: Aaron Brooks re-signs

Aaron Brooks had some moments, I do understand that he brings some value... but he sure didn't help us much in the playoffs, and ultimately he's best suited for a 3rd PG role given his limitations defensively. The problem is that Kirk Hinrich is best suited for a 3rd PG role too.

I guess I'm not disappointed, just a bit underwhelmed.

I'm thinking Lin was chasing playing time (along with the right dollar number). Kemba Walker is their only rostered PG of any worth right now, and he can play off-ball enough to allow he and Lin to play together, I guess.

Yeah I wasn't too thrilled to hear this. It would've been ideal to get Brooks for the vet minimum (4th or 5th guard) and Lin for the LLE (3rd guard). We know the Bulls were pursuing Lin so I can only assume he just didn't want to come here. Really too bad, he would fit like a glove for what Hoiberg will be trying to do this season. At the end of the day I just feel like we'll have to make a trade for a more all-around backup PG, eventually, and we'll have a good chance to do it while relieving the front court log jam. I'd be stoked to get a guy like Darren Collison in exchange for Taj Gibson, for example.
